Life & Work with Scarlett Snow

Today we’d like to introduce you to Scarlett Snow.

Hi Scarlett, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My burlesque journey began in Orlando, FL at the ripe age of 18! I had been a dancer my whole life and often fantasized about running off to become a showgirl with glamourous costumes and late-night bookings, but never imagined it would actually happen. Until I was approached at my not-so-glam day job as a barista by a woman who knew of a group of local, talented queer women in the burlesque space. She put my name in the ears of the director and I had my first show soon after. I worked in Orlando primarily for a few years, then moved to New York in 2016 where I started Honey Burlesque the following year. We now have expanded into Los Angeles, making us one of the few bi-coastal queer women’s burlesque troupes in the country!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The obstacles come often and on time! On top of the general ‘people trying to bring you down’ thing, there’s a hell of a lot of self-struggles as well. I can’t tell you how many times I have sat in a dressing room thinking “I’m not good enough for this show” or “My costumes aren’t up to par with the other dancers”. The list goes on. Don’t get me wrong, this industry is absolutely beautiful but self-comparison can eat you alive in many cases. You’ve gotta have a strong sense of self and awareness to be in any performance-based profession, especially one that requires you to get down to your undies!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a performer, a dancer, a director, a producer, a manager – but I am most proud of the team that is behind all of this.

The group of (16!!) dancers that I’ve managed to cultivate in Honey Burlesque is my absolute greatest accomplishment. Not only are the Honeys (dancers in HB) some of the most talented, beautiful, compassionate, and genuine people that I’ve ever had the pleasure to work with, but they are kind and understanding with each other. I can say with 100% confidence that there is no competitiveness in the branches of Honey Burlesque. They uplift, support, and encourage each other whether it be at a show, photoshoot, or in our Honey training classes. And they constantly inspire me every single day.

I’m forever grateful to them for not only reppin’ the Honey brand in such a positive way but for also keeping me in it when I feel overwhelmed or discouraged. They truly are the heart of this company.

I also need to shout out our incredible brand manager and director of photography – Sam San Roman, who is an absolute marvel of a human. She has such a perfect eye for where our brand is heading and how we want to present to the world. Since 2020, Sam has helped us to create a one-of-a-kind experience for our online fanbase and give Honey the voice we needed.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Okay, I know it’s scary, but just hear me out on these okay?

– Reach out to producers to book you, but don’t beat their door down to get in. They will book you if they want to.
– Some shows aren’t for you, and that’s okay. Keep going and don’t get discouraged if a producer says no.
– There is space for EVERYONE in this field. Everyone. Don’t let anyone tell you differently.
– TAKE CLASS. Seriously. Whether it be ballet, heels, or a dedicated burlesque workshop…just take class. You can always improve and learn something new!
– Don’t be afraid to stand out. You’re going to need to take some chances with your art. If it works, it works. If it doesn’t, move on to the next idea.

Lastly,
– Protect your energy. Observe and learn from those around you, and take note of people who may not have your best interest in mind. Just because they wear rhinestones on the outside doesn’t mean they sparkle on the inside!

Kick ass, you sweet creature! You’ve got this.
