Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan March.
Hi Ryan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
For the first ten years of my career, I was exclusively a writer/actor. After some early success in front of the camera in Tv and Film, I realized that I needed to expand my skill set and elevate my brand, so I evolved into a full-scale production entity – and broadened my focus on filmmaking…mainly production, editing, and physical shooting. (both handheld camera and drone) This allowed for me to work in the many different facets of film production and take control of my career trajectory. As a result, I have become a business owner, and my Production Company, Altruistic Films, is involved in multiple projects and I have grown exponentially as an artist and filmmaker.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would say that it has been as smooth as possible. But that said, there have been many struggles and learning curves along the way. It’s a tough business, and finding my voice was the main hurdle. Deciding which projects to take on was a struggle at first. I had a vision of what I thought I wanted to do, but taking advantage of opportunities and turning them into viable projects was the major growth. Stepping into the documentary space was a very big moment for me. I had always seen myself as exclusively as a narrative filmmaker, and once I let go of all of the preconceptions, my world really opened up and I became more diversified as an artist and producer. Basically, I had to get out of my own way and abandon my own preconceived idea of what I thought I was in order for me to take my company to the next level.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am proud to say that I do a lot. One of my main goals the past three years is to become versed in as many aspects of production as possible. No job is too small. So whether it’s writing and crafting the story, or editing, or even line production, it was important for me to become versed in as many aspects of filmmaking as possible. That has allowed me to elevate my value and play a role in different projects. If I had to pinpoint a specialty, it would have to be storytelling. Scripts, treatments and outlines are my above the line specialties. That and editing. Editing has become my favorite job in production, and at this point is my strongest suit. I am most proud of my recent Documentary Film CITIZEN ATHLETE – a feature documentary about the United States Women’s Bobsled team & the 2022 Winter Olympics.
What are your plans for the future?
I am extremely excited about a project that begins production later this year called American Ruin. It is a feature narrative script that I first started working on back in 2005 and will finally be shot later this year.
