Life & Work with Robert Landau

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Landau.

Hi Robert, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Who I am and what I do today finds its roots in childhood. By age seven, in the third grade, I couldn’t read, didn’t have basic scholastic comprehension, didn’t know the alphabet, had absolutely no self-confidence, was seeing the school psychologist who kept telling my parents that they had a troubled child and I was heavily bullied all the way through junior high school.

I learned that the only way you can overcome who you thought you were during deeply troubling times, is to rise above that ingrained mindset. It’s a choice…and I did just that. When backed against a wall, you can only go one of two directions.

Once afraid to get up in front of two people, I became an Actor in my native New York City. Then I became an International Cruise Director for close to ten years with no less than 300 ports of call on 400 cruises under my belt. Now I’m a National Motivational Speaker, Certified Life Coach and Podcast Host. I love what I do which is to help people remember what they think they’ve forgotten about themselves. It’s all about self-empowerment.

To be able to ‘lift’ others continues to ‘lift’ me and reminds me of who and what I really am.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I have realized that I was my own worst enemy. How so? Mind-chatter, MY mind-chatter. Once I understood that how I talk to myself, within myself, can actually make a huge difference in what happens outside of myself, I began to change my tune. If I can’t support myself and be my own best friend, then what’s the point?

That doesn’t mean that since that time of personal realization, it hasn’t always been smooth sailing. Back in 2007, I lost my parents when their house in Upstate New York burned to the ground, with them in it. My father, Maestro Siegfried Landau, was a world renowned Symphony Orchestra Conductor. My mother, Irene Gabriel-Landau, was a Modern Dancer that studied with the great Martha Graham.

When the horrific tragedy occurred, due to my father’s celebrity within the classical music world, I had various media outlets calling me 24/7 wanting to interview me in front of what was left of the house. It was a story that was carried from New York to Japan.

When horrible things happen, one’s strength is truly tested. It is then that you find out what you’re really made of. I had to always be aware of my mind-chatter and how I could support and love myself through the turmoil of losing two of the people I loved most in my life.

Grieving never ends, but it does get better with time. The key is how you choose to manage the process.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am known for helping people feel so much better about themselves and their lives. It’s all about using energy to uplift those that think they’re in the darkness. I do this via Certified Life Coaching using Zoom, facilitating over 4,500 Motivational Seminars as a National Motivational Speaker and also through a Podcast that I call The Five Minute Life Changer.

I’m most proud of the often amazing results that I’ve been able to achieve in the work that I do. To see people filled with joy and personal empowerment after I do what I do, whether it’s one-on-one or in front of hundreds, life becomes so very worthwhile to me. If I can’t be of service to others, my time here is wasted.

So much of what I learned as an International Cruise Director is what I talk about today. During those years on cruise ships, I went up the Amazon and sat with natives along the way. I had lunch with The Kind of Tonga. I visited remote islands in Indonesia where, only 80 years ago, they were still head hunters. I’ve been to The Ukraine, Russia and have walked some of the Great Wall of China. What did I learn from those amazing years? That we’re all One. We bleed the same color. We are Brothers and Sisters here. The more we treat one another that way, the better things will be for all of us moving forward.

What also sets me apart from others in my industry is that, when I speak, I always wear crazy jackets and fun socks. I’m known for wearing bright colors. That comes from being teased as a kid for wearing colored clothing. So now I’ve flipped a negative into a positive. It’s become a brand for me. People may not remember the name Robert Landau, but they always remember the Speaker that wears crazy jackets and fun socks. If you can’t have fun with life, you’re not living.
