Life & Work with Rin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rin .

Rin

Hi Rin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started guitar when I was 11 years old. My mom bought my first electric guitar at the local music shop down the street. I remember it very clearly, an off-brand sunburst strat with the highest action possible. It would cut through your skin with the amount of force it took to play a note. I had a teacher briefly through my childhood. He was a great teacher, he let me be creative with the instrument. He showed me technique and theory. However, I never could read music for me to use it efficiently and eventually, I found myself learning guitar on my own. I started to play in bands in high school (as a guitarist).

16 years old at the Chain Reaction, selling tickets. 17 years old at the Glasshouse in Pomona selling more tickets. 18 years old running through Sunset Blvd all the way up to Lancaster, playing at the Industry Theatre (which isn’t there anymore). I found myself in and out of so many bands I decided to just stop and focus on something I could take the time to pursue. I made Sleeping Dog. I was 18 years old and enrolled in trade school to help support my music with a promise to push Sleeping Dog the way I always intended to. I started to teach myself everything about music production. I started to practice singing. I started to learn how to edit music videos. Everything I envisioned a band should have and should need to succeed I took the time to learn. Fast forward today, and I’ve written five albums with 50+ songs released and produced.

I have amazing band members that bring the heat live. We just played our headliner at the Troubadour, and we plan on playing a show in April. Come out and check us out.

My songs are about my stories I’ve experienced in the industry. We live in a world full of mindless consumption and pre-planned stardom. Overshadowed by late-stage capitalism that holds its vice grip as a trophy we all look up to and chase.

I always believed no matter what there are people out there who feel the same way I do. That have experienced the same suffering I have and are seeking the same cathartic experience.

Sleeping Dog is 12 years old, and I plan on continuing to connect with my audience and make art that resonates through my stories.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I produce, write, sing, scream, play guitar and bass.

I’d say I specialize in making heavy industrial / nu-metal music. Stuff I grew up listening to but with my own twist on it.

I’m most proud of learning how to produce music. It took quite a while to understand sound engineering, but I’m beginning to understand it the way I understood learning guitar.

What sets me apart is a Sleeping Dog live show is something you won’t see any other band do. We have many stage rituals that personify each song’s meaning. The true fans know every nuance to it.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I’m lucky to be able to perform live with a band and connect with an audience that cares about my music.
