Today we’d like to introduce you to Reina Mun.
Hi Reina, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I define myself as a designer and maker, or essentially someone who enjoys making tangible objects infused with research on interactivity and computational tools within the context of critical design and objecthood. My foundational background lies in architecture, and this has fueled my interest in investigating relationships and interactions between humans, objects, and their surrounding spaces.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Working in the specialized field of design requires a flexible and adaptable approach to handle a wide range of projects and challenges. It’s important to become proficient in various areas of expertise in order to approach research and projects with a critical perspective. In today’s rapidly evolving design landscape, we are encouraged to embrace a more generalist mindset, especially with the advancements in technology. This means we shouldn’t limit ourselves to a specific set of knowledge or confine ourselves to traditional methodologies. Consequently, it can be a bit challenging when embarking on a project that requires expertise in disciplines like engineering, sociology, psychology, architecture, or art.
Luckily, my background in architectural education has equipped me with a versatile skill set that can be applied across different domains. This has allowed me to effectively use my theoretical knowledge, creative concepts, and technical abilities in various applications as I’ve progressed in my career.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I engage in both research and practical application. My research is centered on the theoretical aspects of interactivity, coupled with the development of computational tools for design and fabrication. This specialization allows me to bridge the gap between theory and practical implementation.
