Today we’d like to introduce you to REBECCA HERBERT.
Hi REBECCA, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Football has always been a part of my life. I’ve been involved in the football community since my son was five years old, starting with the West Covina Bruins. What began as me helping out as a team mom grew into bigger roles such as the team’s athletic director and then vice president. Those experiences taught me how powerful sports can be in building confidence, leadership, and community. When the opportunity came to help start the girls’ flag football program at West Covina high school, I jumped right in. I had a lot of support from family, friends, and other football coaches. Building it from the ground up has been an incredible journey. Watching these young women break barriers, gain confidence, and create a sisterhood through flag football has been one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting from scratch wasn’t easy. We didn’t have a full staff at first and trying to balance a JV and Varsity team solo was quite a challenge. We faced player injuries and I was learning the sport and its rules day by day. Balancing my career, personal life, and coaching was challenging, but it taught me patience, adaptability, and perseverance. Seeing the girls grow stronger, gain knowledge, and be passionate about flag football has made every obstacle worth it.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I have been with Monte Vista Elementary for fifteen years, starting my career as a long-term substitute for all grades before moving into my own classroom, teaching 5th grade and primarily 4th grade. I am now a Site TOSA (Teacher on Special Assignment), supporting teachers, students, and families through instructional supports, intervention support, and program coordination while working towards the next step in my career as a future administrator.
As a proud product of the West Covina Unified School District, it’s incredibly meaningful to still cross paths with some of the teachers who once taught me. Seeing them now as colleagues and mentors reminds me of the impact great educators can have, and it inspires me every day to continue giving back to the community that shaped me.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was very competitive and loved taking on leadership roles, whether in sports or in band. I was always involved in activities and enjoyed being part of a team, where I could both contribute and help guide others. I naturally gravitated towards leadership roles and helping people, whether teammates, classmates, or younger students, and found fulfillment in supporting others to reach their goals. Being active, engaged, and a leader in my community has always been a big part of who I am.
