Today we’d like to introduce you to Olivya Soth & Christine Ly.
Hi Olivya & Christine, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We are the owners of OG Slimes! Our story began as two Gen Z’s who accidentally became best friends on a trip to Japan in 2019. However, the OG Slimes story began all the way back in 2016. One warm summer night in her Southern California home, Christine binge-scrolled through Instagram with one hand and smoked a joint with the other. An interesting video of slime caught her attention and she found herself going down a rabbit hole oozing with slime. What is slime? How do you make slime? Where do you buy good slime? At this time, the slime industry was extremely niche and there wasn’t enough information on the Internet. She searched for ingredients to experiment with and made her own one of a kind slimes. Each slime was named after a weed strain. After all, the idea came to her while she was high. Christine began to share her creations on Instagram, but the one slime that burst the scene was Butter OG. She realized that she had created the first-ever butter slime texture. Within a year, OG Slimes gained 1 million followers on Instagram. The small business expanded alongside the demand for unique slimes. Soon after, the business graduated from selling slime out of a small bedroom to out of a 4000 square foot warehouse. Throughout this time, Olivya became co-owner. We’ve continued to share our creativity through slime and to grow the business even further year after year. Currently, we receive 3,000 orders a month on average, with as many as 5,000 orders during the busy seasons.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has not been smooth. As first-time business owners, we credit all of our success to the growth and learnings from our mistakes. It has taken years of trial and error, experimentation and evolving to get to where we are today. The biggest recent challenge was building back up after the COVID-19 pandemic/recession. Not only that, as Gen Z females, we’ve had to overcome the challenges of dealing with (older) people who do not take our business seriously and undermine our abilities.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We’re so lucky to be able to have fun and make slime for a living! The entire process from product development to graphic design, marketing, shipping, etc. is done in-house in Los Angeles. We have an amazing team of Gen Z women who work hard to help bring our ideas to life.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
If you feel called to do something, do it. Try it. If it doesn’t turn out the way you’d hoped, learn from that experience and try again. Keep your mind and your heart open.
