Life & Work with Nicolette Rhodes-Morgan of Long Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicolette Rhodes-Morgan.

Hi Nicolette, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Since I was a young girl, I’ve always been drawn to anything creative music, art, food, and of course, fashion. I was inspired by the way style could transform someone, not just on the outside but in their confidence, too. I grew up glued to the Food Network, MTV, and fashion shows like What Not to Wear and America’s Next Top Model. I loved how fashion blended shape, texture, and color to tell a story without words it was self-expression in its purest form.

I still remember the first time I really made a style statement: sixth grade. I wore a ’70s-inspired button-down with a sharp lapel and silky abstract print, paired with velvet purple wide-leg pants. It was bold, creative, and completely me. From that moment on, I was hooked. Over the years, I experimented constantly playing with trends, mixing eras, and always finding new ways to make my outfits feel like art. I don’t think I ever imagined fashion could become a career back then, but in hindsight, it was always a part of who I was.
In my early 20s, I became an art teacher for a non-profit, where I taught for nearly ten years. It was such a fulfilling experience and allowed me to use my creativity in new and meaningful ways. I honestly never imagined I’d have a career in the fashion world I thought I’d always stay teaching arts for years to come.

But after moving to the UK with my husband and later returning to California, I started craving something different. I wanted to do something that allowed me to be creative but also make women feel good about themselves. A close friend encouraged me to get certified in Body & Style Analysis, and from the very first lesson, I knew I’d found my calling. Everything I learned felt natural, almost like I had been doing it intuitively for years.

After becoming certified, I took the leap and launched La Moda Personal Styling to help women understand their unique body shapes and feel confident in their clothing. A few months later, that same friend nudged me to pursue a Color Analysis certification, which would complement my styling services and provide the building blocks to finding authentic style. I flew to Texas for an intensive weekend training, and it completely changed my perspective on how color impacts confidence and personal expression.

Since then, I’ve expanded La Moda’s offerings to include closet cleanses (a refresh and organization of your wardrobe with intention), virtual styling (where I help clients build new wardrobes from the comfort of home), and soon in-store shopping guidance.

At the heart of everything I do is one simple mission: to make style less complicated and more fun. I want women to love their unique shape, embrace their individuality, and realize that it’s never about changing your body it’s about changing the clothes.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I wouldn’t say it’s been a smooth road but I truly believe the best things in life rarely are!

For me, the biggest challenge wasn’t the work itself it was believing in myself enough to start. I never thought of myself as someone who could run a business. I was comfortable being creative but didn’t see myself as an entrepreneur. It took a lot of encouragement from friends and a lot of internal pep talks to take the leap.

Imposter syndrome was another big hurdle. Even though I knew I had a natural eye for style and color, it was hard not to second-guess myself. But over time, seeing the transformations in my clients and watching them light up when they saw themselves differently helped quiet those doubts.

I’ve learned that confidence is like a muscle: the more you use it, the stronger it gets. Surrounding myself with people who believed in me and staying focused on why I started to help women feel confident in their own skin has made all the difference.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a Certified Personal Stylist and Color Analyst dedicated to helping women discover their authentic style and build confidence through clothing.

Through my Personal Styling work, I guide women in finding silhouettes that celebrate their unique shape and reflect their lifestyle. I believe everyone has a personal style it just takes the right guidance to bring it to life. My goal is to make fashion approachable, sustainable, and fun, so women can stop overthinking what to wear and start feeling great in their clothes and express themselves in a way they didn’t know was possible.

My Color Analysis service is a completely bespoke experience it’s not the typical “seasonal” analysis. Instead, I create a custom palette that’s detailed and tailored to each client’s natural coloring. I believe color has the power to transform how we feel, and when used intentionally, it can be one of the most empowering tools in a woman’s wardrobe. I love the tailored process because it’s like no other catagorized system out there. I am lucky to have been trained by a certified image master.

What sets me apart is my approach. I don’t style for my clients- I style WITH them. I listen closely to their goals, their insecurities, and their desires. Together, we build a wardrobe that’s realistic, versatile, and uniquely theirs. I also encourage clients to work with what they already own to reimagine their wardrobe without constant spending or chasing trends. A true collaboration. I want my clients to a part of the process. After all personal styling is in the name. It’s deeply personal.

My proudest moments are always the messages I receive from clients sharing photos in outfits we created together or in colors that make them glow. I love hearing that they received several compliments in one day all because of their outfits but most importantly the confidence that is shown when wearing an outfit that makes them feel fantastic. Those moments remind me why I do what I do it’s not just about clothes, it’s about confidence, creativity, and self-love.

How do you think about luck?
I’ve definitely had moments of good luck like having close friends who actually saw potential in me before I saw it in myself, or clients who believed in my vision early on. But I also believe that you have to be open to those lucky moments you have to take the risk, even when it feels scary.

Bad luck? Sure, there have been slow seasons and unexpected challenges, but I see them as lessons. Every obstacle has pushed me to refine my services, trust my instincts, and stay true to my mission.

At the end of the day, I feel incredibly lucky to do what I love. To help women see themselves in a new light and build confidence through something as simple (and as powerful) as personal style.

My faith plays a huge role in my business. I always say that I want to bless my clients just as they bless me. We all have gifts to share and that can be given through anything like conversations or even unexpected connections with my clients. I think of luck as divine blessings and I can say confidently that my prayers have certainly been answered when it comes to La Moda’s big or small successes.
