Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathan Waters.

NATHAN WATERS

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Expression of oneself in the ways that I know now was bleak as a youth growing up in South Central. What was considered the way to be back in the early 00s has greatly changed over the decades for me. Wearing certain colors was one of those aspects of life that had plenty of restrictions to do with a limited freedom of expression when I was younger.

In Los Angeles, we have so much love to give, but we also have a vulture culture, as many parts of the world do. Vulture culture here has strong connections to colors and the disarray in how you wear these colors while operating in each section of LA. My father was a great leader within my tribe of folk, and I respected him more as I got older. I grew to understand much as to why he was strict in what I wore as a kid growing into an older man. It was his form of protecting us because the streets can be cold.

This upbringing caused natural frustrations initially which grew into stronger forms of motivation to where I am now. That form of protection from my father in light of how we move in LA has been part of the main reasons as to why I love creation with a variety of colors now. Colors can be attributed in different ways such as new patterns of clothing, different colors within the music I listen to, the type of flowers in nature, etc..

Music, photography, fashion and many creative forms have created a home or rather more room for me to evolve in expression patterns whether blue being my emotional mood or yellow being the shirt I desire to wear on a lovely Sunday.

I now have space to wear different textures of clothing, I can now use different photography films at a variety of iso’s such as Cinestill 800T or Ektar 100. I look at these moments thinking of my grandmother as I had very few pictures with her.

Living in our favorite soft moments with some of our loved ones personally brings me joy. For the fact that I lived in the moment so much with her, but not having many photos to look back on motivated me to become more intentional with capturing more moments in time.

I’ve been working on a lot more music , original work while using melodies to portray a palace in the present time. I’ve been using different drums and musical patterns to expand my approaches.

As you can sense, I am fond of intentions and memories. Those aspects of life are literally timeless.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Life has been smooth but also hard. Those who are/were near and dear to me recently transitioned. For those of you who don’t know me, I truly love my people.

That part of me is always on command; if I love you, it’s forever. Relationships can present so many challenges, but the bigger picture within the frame is what I also reflect on.

I miss them greatly, but they’ve been with us every step of the way. Therefore, I walk not alone. My tribe of folk now support me when I reach out which is another characteristic I have been doing my best to improve.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Nathan Waters is a multifaceted expressionist with a focus in composing music, film photography, and modeling to name a few. One hidden part of me that I am shy to show is my love for writing. I am a talkative but shy person, so I usually don’t say much.

I like to just pop out when it’s time. I dwell in the habits of talking less, but the actions say much more.

I am most proud of Nathan for reaching a point of not being so closed in with letting others know that I make music. I just feel for me, I am not talking about talking. I was raised by OGs, and they would always preach to me the importance of moving with intention.

My response to negativity is one of those things that sets me apart. I can’t say too much about the music but what I can confirm is that there will be a blend of sounds you never thought you’d either like or think go together.

One thing about me, I will alway be Nathan Waters. That’s all I can be.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
We all are learning how to become comfortable with the uncomfortable.

What’s a life without pressure? Scared money doesn’t make money. Closed mouths don’t get fed.

I mean struggle defines the meaning of life. How could there ever be an understanding of separation if risk were to not be taken? I take risks all the time. Since I was a young man, I’ve been a risk taker. Being raised by risk-takers allowed me to grow thicker skin.

I took many risks sleeping in my car to fully understand why I never want to be at that kind of low point ever again. I took a risk resigning from a job in Idaho with the salary of 70k a year fresh out of college to then pursue education at the 1500 Sound Academy back in Inglewood to expand my knowledge in music.

I regret none of my risks, my mistakes. No losses but many lessons.

Risk(s) should not be something we should feel guilty for, embarrassed about, for me that’s the perfect motivation to level up. I personally am not fond of things being easy.

I make life harder for myself all the time just to test myself as a result of seeing if I am capable of not breaking during hardships.

I’m also learning the beauty of asking for help. Not easy but rewarding.

We are in leap year, so go leap and see what you are made of.
