Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Rotter.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have been singing since I was a little girl. I sang professionally for movies/tv shows/etc. From the young age of four! I studied opera and went to school for that but ultimately that lifestyle wasn’t what I saw myself having for the rest of my life. I had started songwriting in high school and then finally got up the courage to share my own music in college. Once I learned how to merge my creativity with my vocal abilities, I found something I really love. I released an album as a soloist and then formed my trio JEMS. We are still together, writing and performing and recording our second album. I am currently working on my first album as my new project Monsterra. I’m excited to put out some new solo music in 2022!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest challenges I’ve faced as a singer/songwriter and performer have been mostly related to other people’s egos and watching people second guess me because of their own hang ups. Once I started realizing that the real ones treat everyone with respect, it gave me so much more confidence in who I am as an artist. I don’t have time to coddle grown men’s egos or play stupid games for other people’s pride. I don’t really like walking around telling people why they should trust my experience so it’s been fun sifting through a sea of BS (especially in LA) to find people who know how to collaborate in an ego-free way.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a vocalist (lead & backup) for recordings and performances. Sometimes on-camera and stage, sometimes just audio. I write songs (pop, folk, rock, r&b). I perform my own songs and other people’s songs and love creating experiences. I am most proud of the sonic environments I love to create through harmony and instrumentation. IDK what sets me apart… I’m so normal… I bet I have a twin out there somewhere. It might be Adele. She has a better voice (obviously, she’s Adele) but we’re both moms who sing and write songs… But in all seriousness, I think I’m unique because I can scream rock songs, perform classical arias, write trashy pop songs and songs that make you cry.
Practically speaking, you can check out my first album Plains under the name Jessica Rotter and it also has a short film for seven of the songs. My band JEMS’ first album is self-titled. My new solo project is Monsterra and my first single is coming out on January 21, 2022.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I love creating and I love creating with generous souls. Making music or food, crafts, art, films, anything brings me so much joy. I also love empowering other creators. There’s nothing better than sharing life with people who believe in their power wholeheartedly.
I also am overjoyed by being a parent and partner to my son, two soon to be step kids and incredible fiance.
