Today we’d like to introduce you to Mika Boorem.
Hi Mika, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
It all started out in Tucson, Arizona on a little ranch called the x-9. After my education with the rabbits, coyotes and rattlesnakes we moved to Beverly Hills. Like that movie the Beverly Hillbillies. And if you’re going to live in Beverly Hills – what are you going to do? Acting. So I got into acting. And found out quite early on that – Hey I’m actually good at this stuff. When I’d finish one movie, they’d send me over and I’d start another. Before you know it, fifty movies and TV shows later – I was 18 years old. So I decided to take a break and see what was going on in the rest of the world. But I have that bug in my blood. Having worked with some of the best directors and filmmakers in the world, I decided to go back and start making my own films. The first of many full features. -‘Hollywood.con’ has just been released on Amazon.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I feel there are always struggles when you’re setting out to do something worth doing. It’s been a bumpy road here and there but I’ve had the fortune of making some good friends along the way. The most important things about filmmaking and the entertainment world is to hang onto your passion, dedication and master the skill of perseverance. If you hit a wall, regroup and go around. I believe if you want something and you’re willing to work for it, you can 100 percent make it happen.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m an actress turned filmmaker. I strive to get stories to the screen that people can connect with. Film is a great art medium it can be used to change the world. Through film, we can experience a different time or place. Follow the story of someone entirely different than us but understand their wants and needs. Thus allowing us to relate on a human level. Films can evoke compassion and empathy. Movies and television connect our personal life stories in ways that otherwise would not be possible. Television and film make the world a smaller place. I’m always so excited about the possibility of how far a project can reach and touch the lives of others. I look forward to the day when I make a film that leaves a huge impact on the world. That’s a major goal of mine! I just directed a full feature titled ‘Hollywood.con’. It’s a fun comedic film meant to leave you with a smile. It’s quirky and good-natured with a great cast including Tom Arnold, Devin Ratray, Paige Howard, Herbert Russell, Brian Krause, Cody Kasch, and Billy Bob Thornton with the Boxmaster’s among others.
I hope that people watch the film and find themselves relating to one of the many characters. Their storylines twist, turn and entwine as they make their way from Hollywood into the jungles of Latin America. The film is part ‘It’s a Mad Mad World’ part ‘Get Shorty’ part ‘Romancing the Stone’ and a whole lot more. As you watch the film be on the lookout for all of the homages to favorite films. There are hidden easter eggs throughout. This film offers the perfect escapism and motivational ‘Go for it’! Albeit all the characters ‘Going for it’ in the film do so in a roundabout more complicated way that adds to their mishaps and troubles. Check it out for a light-hearted, fun adventure! Also, check out the music video ‘Catch Me if You Can’ by artist Travis Tidwell. I directed this – we filmed it during the pandemic. We filmed in Arkansas – on a ranch and in a barn. If you’re into cars, check out the cool Shelby Mustang featured in the video. ‘Catch Me if You Can’ was released on Country Music Television (CMT). And the video is now nominated for ‘Music Video of the Year’ at the Josie Awards. We will be attending the awards show in September. So excited people are enjoying the music video.
What were you like growing up?
I’ve always been extremely curious and interested. The never-ending list of questions and quest for knowledge started from day one. To this day, I love to research and read. I enjoy exploring niche topics. The stranger and more rare the topic, the better for me. I think this developed my passion for storytelling and lead into why I decided to pursue the career of a filmmaker…
