Today we’d like to introduce you to Michaela P. Shelton.
Hi Michaela P., we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a 28 years old writer from San Leandro, California. I fell in love with writing when I was a little girl and I went on to receive a Bachelor of Science in Journalism from San Jose State University. In 2016, I began to do freelance writing for creatives and entrepreneurs and created a lifestyle blog to share my experiences. Back in 2019, I expanded my writing repertoire to include screenwriting and created a digital series called Reckless Behavior: The Series that now has two seasons.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest struggle I have faced has been people not taking me seriously. When I first brought up my idea for the show, everyone kind of dismissed me as if they didn’t think I’d be able to make it happen. Someone that I collaborated with told me that they were surprised at my level of professionalism because when I initially reached out, they thought “Look at this naive young girl.” At first, I was offended that I was underestimated, but after some thought I was happy I was able to prove them wrong and exceed their expectations. Another major obstacle has been securing funding.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a writer, I am most proud of my web series, Reckless Behavior: The Series, which is available on YouTube. What sets me apart from others is that the series is loosely based on my life and my post-college journey. After getting my bachelor’s degree, I thought my life was going to be perfect – dream job, marriage, children, house with a picket fence LOL- but I quickly realized that life doesn’t work that way, so I wanted to share my experiences with other millennials so they could know that they are not alone in the struggle.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Creating my media platform Queenmediacollective.com and my first web series were major risks. It was really scary recruiting other creatives, not knowing how much traffic our art would receive. Also, the financial aspect was risky, because as a creative you never know if you’ll see a return on investment. Overall, my view on risk tasking is to go for it! You only live once and you never know how a risk will play out, so rather than play it safe, I encourage everyone to bet on themselves.
