Today we’d like to introduce you to Marvin Castelle
Marvin, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Our story begins with the love of jiu-jitsu. Marvin Castelle, originally from Flint, Michigan wanted to start a MMA career and switched gears to nogi jiu jitsu. Marvin watched Eddie Bravo’s unorthodox strategy and method ithroughYouTube videos and highlights. He left home and moved all the way to Los Angeles, CA to train with Eddie Bravo.
Eventually becoming one of Eddie Bravo’s main black belts in the 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu, is the one who hit the imanari submission that got 12 million views in one night. We met at our headquarters school in downtown and instantly connected. We live and breathe jiu-jitsu, training together twice a day, every day. We wanted to open our own gym in 2020, but the pandemic hit. Fortunately, we opened our school in 2021 and have been sharing our knowledge of jiu-jitsu to the community.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been a struggle the whole way as new business owners trying to make it in this economy. We’ve made mistakes, but we learn from them. I think the hardest parts of running a business are finding the right people to join our team and navigating the social media landscape to boost our awareness in the community.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Marvin Castelle
I’m a jiu-jitsu black belt under Master Eddie Bravo, specializing in the art of strategy in no-gi jiu-jitsu. I’m best known for my highlighted submissions in the no-gi jiu-jitsu community. I’m most proud of 10th Planet Gym, Dark Arts Association, and building a family with a baby on the way.
What sets me apart from others is my “never give up” mentality. It’s easy for most people to quit, but I don’t. We keep moving, learn from our mistakes, and adapt.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I enjoy Dr. Larry Gaiters’ church podcast. I also love YouTube content from smaller creators who offer unique perspectives. The “Forever White Belt” podcast is another favorite. Lastly, I find value in Tariq Nasheed’s radio show.
