Today we’d like to introduce you to Marvette Davis.
Marvette, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
As a child, my older sisters were such blessings to me, they taught me how to braid on our doll heads. My siblings don’t braid anymore but the skill has always stuck with me. Middle school, high school, and college, I would mention to all my friends that I knew how to braid, which eventually lead me to being the girl that braided everyone’s hair. During that time, I got the necessary practice to improve my skill. In which, my skill improved drastically.
After high school, I still had the skill of braiding hair, but still wanted to explore other professional options for my future. I went CSUDH, SOC Major because I envisioned myself being a social worker. Went to school, graduated Class of 2014, and landed a great job as a Lead Supervisor at a teen rehabilitation center. Did that for a few years, then transitioned into working in education for LAUSD. Working in that field, I learned alot but I realized I wasn’t following my true passion.
When the pandemic started, I was able to really sit down, think, explore my options, and constantly reinforce to myself to follow my heart. In addition, when the schools opened back up, I didn’t have the drive or the ambition to go back in the classroom setting. Initially, I was planning a way to get back into my passion and skill of braiding hair, and enhancing beauty in women and children.
AND I DID EXACTLY WHAT I REINFORCED TO MYSELF. I started with creating a business space, while branding and marketing my business, created an LLC, reached out to a financial advisor on how to invest in my retirement, and most importantly had support from friends, family, and sometimes from associates.
My experience was a journey of realization but the experience has taught me to always follow my heart, even if I have other options. Because now, I’m a lot happier. Even though, I don’t have the drive to go back in the classroom setting, I do have the drive and ambition to go into my business space and apply a skill that I have been doing since childhood.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I realized, entrepreneurship is never going to be a smooth road. When I first started, I was feeling unnoticed, under booked, and underpaid. But I had to realize, this is a process. Just because I have a talent or skill, doesn’t mean it will be a smooth road or people will automatically notice my brand. But when I officially got my ‘foot on the door’, I still had to work, on top of more work. There is a lot of branding, marketing, word of mouth, and consistency, in the braiding business. I also had to realize, there are so many braiders out there, so creating a rapport with clientele, being friendly, providing a clean and safe space is very important to maintain your business. So I think starting out would be the hardest part, but staying consistent, being a woman of your word, and displaying your skill is the easy/ smooth part.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My name is Marvette and I have a braiding business called MARVETTE’s Magic, LLC., which specializes in different braiding styles that contributes to enhancing beauty in women and young girls.
I am most proud of taking the risk of full fledged entrepreneurship, after working in social service for 8+ years.
I am different from most braiders because I am a woman of my word. If you’ve set an appointment with me, that’s the time I’ve reserved for you. Let’s laugh, have girl talk, mommy talk, express our weaknesses, all while you are promised a confidence boost by end of your appointment.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Different qualities and characteristics that I think are most important, that has contributed to my success is being a woman of integrity and honesty, friendly and personable, and not to mention being grounded and wholesome.
I wholeheartedly believe in being a woman of my word, a woman of integrity. Not only am I trying to maintain a healthy rapport with my clientele, my goal is also maintain a trusting relationship. I’m adamant about not canceling appointments that are scheduled by clientele. For instance, if I’ve already agreed to provide a service within a reserved time frame, I have to follow through with what I’ve already agreed on. I want my clientele to rely on the fact that they are getting a MARVETTE’s Magic service, on the day and time it was already scheduled.
I am totally a positive and uplifting ‘girl’s girl’. I am always surround by women, so I think being personal and friendly has always attracted new clientele, for me. I have a very vibrant, funny, and jolly personality. So when women feel comfortable with having conversations or sharing a laugh with me, I always make sure to mention about my braiding business, and give them business card or exchange social media. But ultimately, being friendly and personable is a great way to market myself and my braiding business.
I also think being grounded, taking care of my mental health and knowing how regulate my emotions is key for me to excel at my job duties. I am my first priority. Along with being an entrepreneur, it is also my duty to put myself first. I believe, if I don’t take care of myself, I am incapable for providing a service or taking care of others. Therefore, I always make sure to find the time to do so. Whether it’s workout out, spending time to myself to reinforce positive affirmations, or simply taking advantage of self care days. Being in business can be very overwhelming, so that’s it’s imperative to find the time to decrease the feeling of anxiety, stress, impatience, or irritation. I am more likely to excel in my profession, when I prioritize my mind, body, and spirit.
