Life & Work with Marlies Bell of Marina del Rey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marlies Bell

Hi Marlies, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am originally from Vienna, moved to New York and studied acting at Lee Strasberg’s theatre & film institute. Relocated to L.a for a pilot and did lots of commercials, theatre, dancing and singing. I produce my own films and have a production company. Play music and guitar for friends and family and my son who just turned 10 months.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Struggles were to get an artist visa and later a green card, to get my projects into sag and approved with all the regulations. To have side hustles from dog walking to babysitting to being a waiter and working during the day and learning scripts at night. Also have a side job in sales where I travelled all through the US so sometimes I was in hotels in Montana taping an audition or singing a song for a new musical into my iPhone on a bus ride in the middle of nowhere. Rarely seeing my family because they live in Europe and the flights are expensive. Mentally dealing with the rejection over and over again hearing why I’m not enough and always remembering to keep my head up.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I act sing and dance. I do lots of German parts and also help translating sometimes. I am a triple thread they call it- which is musical theatre trained so I can be booked in all three genres. I’m most proud when I embodied Adrienne bailon on television because I think to embody a real life person is always the biggest challenge. I also loved shooting better call Saul in Albuquerque and working on I am the night with the director of wonderwomen patty jenkins was also an amazing experience. I love to perform covers and acoustic versions of famous pop songs for events. I am also writing my first book right now which is about recovery trying to help people who get lost on their ways.

What matters most to you? Why?
My Family and my friends are the most Important things in my life. Followed by being an artist and expressing my creative energy whether that’s through singing or movement. And of course my dog, nutella. I always strive to help and pass on what’s been given to me, whether that’s opportunity or knowledge or love
