Life & Work with Marissa Sample of Porter Ranch

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marissa Sample.

Hi Marissa, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey has been anything but linear. It’s been a mix of growth, healing, and a lot of unlearning. I’ve always been a storyteller, whether that’s been through writing, songwriting, or just capturing the beauty in everyday moments. But for a long time, I held back. I was creative, but I was also guarded. Afraid of being too vulnerable, too much, or not enough.

Things began to shift when I became a parent. Something about raising little humans made me want to go deeper, not just in how I showed up for them, but in how I showed up for myself. I realized that in order to raise emotionally aware, confident, and whole children, I needed to do the work to become that kind of person myself.

That’s when my healing journey truly began. I started unpacking things I had buried for years. Trauma, limiting beliefs, generational patterns and even repressed memories. Slowly, I began choosing myself. That inner work changed everything. It gave me clarity, purpose, and a strong desire to live more intentionally.

As I shared pieces of that journey online, I found that so many others were craving the same kind of depth and honesty. That’s really what drives me now: using my story, not from a place of shame or pity, but from power and healing.
I believe that when we share from a place of healing and authenticity, we give others permission to do the same.

Through that process, my creativity came alive in a new way. Songwriting and speaking my truth online became more than just a passion, it became a form of therapy. It gave me language for things I had never been able to express before. It helped me reconnect with parts of myself I had long forgotten.

Where I am today is still very much in progress, but I’m proud of the space I’m creating.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not a smooth road but I don’t think I’d be who I am if it had been. I’ve had to unlearn a lot of things I thought made me strong, like staying quiet, shrinking myself, or pushing through pain without acknowledging it. Navigating motherhood while trying to heal old wounds was one of the hardest but most necessary parts of my journey. There were moments I felt lost in the roles I carried—mom, partner, creative, woman—but those were the moments that led me back to myself. They taught me how to sit with discomfort, trust my intuition, and choose myself daily.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a storyteller at heart. Whether that’s through songwriting, creating content, or sharing pieces of my journey online. I think what sets me apart is my honesty. I don’t pretend to have it all together. I share the wins and the hard days, the healing and the hurt. I want people to feel seen and less alone. I’m most proud of the fact that I keep showing up—on days when it’s easy and especially on days when it’s not. And I’m proud that I’m raising two amazing kids while doing it.

I’ve also been working on something special behind the scenes, a podcast that’s been on my heart for a while now. It’s still in the works, but I can’t wait to share more soon.

What I love most is the connection. When someone messages me and says, “I felt that,” or “Thank you for sharing this,” or “I really needed this today,” it reminds me why I started. Whether it’s a song lyric or a post, I love knowing it reached someone’s heart. The most challenging part is giving myself permission to rest and not feel guilty about it. As a mom and a creative, it’s easy to feel like you should always be “doing.” But I’ve learned that rest is part of the work too.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
My biggest advice is to lead with intention and authenticity. Don’t just look for a mentor or connection because it seems like the “right” next thing. Look for people who genuinely align with your values, your energy, and the season you’re in. The most meaningful connections I’ve made didn’t come from big networking events or perfectly crafted DMs, they came from being myself, showing up consistently, and sharing my story in an honest way. I also believe mentorship doesn’t always have to be a formal relationship. Some of my biggest mentors don’t even know they’re mentoring me. I follow their work, listen to their interviews, study how they move, and apply what resonates. So stay open, stay curious, and embrace the idea that connection can find you in the most unexpected places. You never know how far one simple conversation can take you.
