Today we’d like to introduce you to Maggie Wu.
Hi Maggie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m an illustrator and designer from Shanghai, currently based in Los Angeles and a recent ArtCenter College of Design graduate. My story of art started with my childhood doodling. As I grew up I deeply realize how art is a big part of my life and I always have the desire to tell stories from my imagination. Luckily, four years of ArtCenter life gave me the key to becoming a professional illustrator.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey with illustration is fairly smooth but with a few bumps.
Trying to find my personal style is a big one and I struggled a lot as I started to learn illustration. In the first two years, I always asked my friends if they can recognize my work if I don’t tell them, and I never approved of the positive feedback in my deep-down heart. However, I’m lucky that I gradually find my path with my side interests in worldwide cultural studies as I read books and spend time in museums. I started to merge my own Chinese background and cultural pattern study into my works.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As an illustrator and a designer, I’m currently working in the branding, advertising, and book publishing field. I always feel glad that I carry an oriental background and I would put them into my art and designs, and they make my works shine. So I would love to use my works to deliver cultural elements and the infinite dreams in my heart.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I won’t describe myself as a successful person yet since I feel like I just start my career, and I have so much to explore. For the characteristics, I would say “curiosity and perseverance” are my keys. I always keep my inner child’s curiosity to explore unknown features and feelings to inspire my works, and I always choose to keep climbing the little art mountain as I made friends with lines, colors, and design forms. I learn about their characteristics and consider the way to keep a long time relationship with them.
