Life & Work with Maejoy Dotdot

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maejoy Dotdot.

Maejoy Dotdot

Hi Maejoy, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Thank you so much for having me! It’s such an honor to be apart of a platform that’s so supportive towards the arts/music. I am beyond grateful to have the opportunity to share my backstory!

Born and Raised in Oceanside & San Diego areas as well as Las Vegas, I’m new to the Los Angeles culture/scene!
During my upbringing, music played a significant role in my life. Coming from a family of singers, & musicians, with my grandparents being a popular singing band/duo in the Philippines, I was exposed to a world of music from a young age. I have fond memories of accompanying them during their performances as a child. Additionally, my mother was a singer, and being around her band/listening to her music, I would often sing along to her songs. Funny story, at the age of 3, I was able to read & during that time my mom was a single mom working at a karaoke bar as a bartender. Because the owners were family friends, they allowed my mom to bring me to work with her but I would have to stay in a certain section of the bar. However, I would sneak off as she busy serving, and go to the stage & start singing the songs since I was able to read.
This early exposure to music ignited my passion, leading me to attend a performing arts high school and college. Since the age of 16, I have been performing with my band The Noir Movement & various other solo projects along the way. Now I am blessed to say that I’m a full-time performer and artist. My ultimate goal is to share my music globally while providing platforms for other artists to showcase their talents. I dream of opening up a business in coffee, blended with a creative space for artists of all avenues.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’d say my journey has not always been smooth, but I am grateful for the challenges I have faced. When I was little, my mom always encouraged me to auditions for shows such as: The Voice or Americas Got Talent. She would surround me in spaces where I’d experience singing in a studio or meeting talent scouts. I realized throughout my journey I didn’t just want to be a singer & that I wanted to be a writer/independent artist.

And so far an independent artist, I have taken on various roles, such as writer, engineer, vocal producer, bandmate, promoter, booker, and event coordinator. Each of these roles requires a great deal of skill, patience, and commitment. I told myself that if I were to become an artist, I’d want to learn as much as I could in the music business industry. I don’t want to restrict myself to one direction & I’ve found so much beauty taking on the responsibility of so many roles. I’ve met and connected with such amazing people globally, locally, etc. And I’ve gotten to understand that there’s much more to the industry than just being the artist. I have encountered rejection both in the business and creative aspects, which has helped me develop resilience. I have also encountered individuals who were not supportive of my artistic path, but this has taught me to differentiate between opinions and constructive feedback. The support I have received from those who believe in me, has made this journey so much enjoyable and fulfilling.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I would say my specialization lies in songwriting, and I consider myself a voice for the vulnerable. I am naturally drawn to expressing the emotions of those who connect more with their sad, soulful, and dark sides. I put a lot of thought into my lyrics and take pride in the songs I have created with just my guitar or keys. What sets me apart from others is my refusal to confine myself to one style or genre. I draw inspiration from various sources and primarily create based on my own experiences. Being an artist requires bravery as we vocalize our deepest emotions. While I often write about heartbreak, I am most proud of the songs I have written about dementia and Alzheimer’s. These diseases make it difficult for individuals to express their grief, and through music and writing, I have found a way to cope with the loss of someone dear to me who suffered from these conditions. I’m currently working on a new sound musically & tapping into my rnb side! I was so focused on an indie pop/rock project the previous year, that I’m now ready to showcase my vocal skills & the raspy, soulful side of MAEJOY.

What makes you happy?
There are so many things that bring me happiness, including my friends, family, music, fans, local community, food and my faith in God. I am incredibly blessed to have had lifelong support from both old and new supporters. I am grateful for the opportunities that have come my way and those that await me in the future. I have no complaints about my life and cherish each day as a gift.
