Today we’d like to introduce you to Madison Mills.
Hi Madison, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Happy Healing was a small seed of an idea I had in my mind since I was in elementary school. I created the idea of “the happy company” without an attachment to what it would one day blossom into. I was raised by my empathic-massage therapist-single-mother, Tania, and my strong-willed, independent grandmother, Carole (or Yaya as many know her), who was battling ovarian cancer for most of my adolescence into early adulthood. Being surrounded by these women – my women – and hearing firsthand their hardships with malpractice in the medical field, violence in domestic relationships, struggles with self image, and hormonal imbalance left me longing for a sense of connectivity between myself and others who are dealing with their own individual struggles behind closed doors. I began to observe closely how we as humans – women particularly – are essentially told to “hush-hush” and are left to fend for ourselves without any guidance of how to self soothe using natural resources. I struggled immensely with mental health during high school and found comfort within meditation practices and self regulation tactics such as sound healing through frequencies, breath work, and crystal healing during moments of distress. I was gifted my 200 hour yoga teacher training course by a dear friend and mentor when I graduated high school and dove headfirst into my ayurvedic studies from there. It has been five years now since receiving my 200HR-RYT certification and Happy Healing has transformed exponentially. As time has progressed, I have become more invested in holistic methods of healing. I am on the road to becoming a 500 hour Certified Yoga Teacher this year as I complete my 300HR-RYT journey. I currently offer several services through Happy Healing including 1:1 yoga sessions, group classes and events in local spaces, hand made aromatherapy Florida Water spray, locally sourced crystals, and more. Recently, I have been exploring hosting pop-up in-person yoga classes & healing circles in outdoor LA spaces around the city. Follow me on instagram (@happyhealingmomma) to keep updated with where I will be hosting my next event!
I always knew that helping the human collective heal on a mass scale level was apart of my journey here earth side. I now acknowledge that specifically connecting us back to the tools the earth has gifted us – and that society has taken away from us – such as story telling, community building, and movement is a large part of my work here too. Happy Healing is about finding the joy within the healing process and a reminder that we are not alone within our struggles.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been easy but it has been insanely rewarding. I received ridicule from external sources when I chose to take the road far less traveled and commit to a 200 hour yoga course rather than attending college with most of my peers. A cocktail of imposter syndrome and completing my initial training course in the midst of 2020 led me to putting off starting to teach yoga for another year or so once I had received my certification. A incredible sense of self doubt and mental fog over took and I truly believed that I was not “meant to teach”. As I returned back to my personal practice, I was reminded of the work I was so deeply attached to and passionate about. Divine timing offered consistent opportunities with a couple local studios and I dove headfirst into full-time teaching from there. Pushing through judgement and learning to block out noise deterring me from my true calling for years was key to allowing myself the room to grow my craft. It is liberating to be able to empower myself. I work hard and consistently. I am grateful that I allowed myself to step into my role as a creative and a small business founder while leaving behind the stigma others cast upon me.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in human connection and holistic practices. Happy Healing is mostly known for the local events I host in LA County centered around highlighting different modalities of healing and broadcasting a local diverse range of healers. I am mostly known for my addition of astrology methodology and self study (Svadhyaya) while in a yoga practice – working in tid bits of current cosmic knowledge that may land differently while you are in a physical moving meditation. The combination of these several approaches make for an ethereal sense of balance from within as you feel more deeply connected to the Earth and those surrounding you that gets carried onwards off of the mat.
I am most proud of the local events I have been able to host thus far. Seeing a group of all walks of life come together to create a ripple of change within a safe container is inspiring. To see that ancient methods such as yoga and sound healing and aromatherapy have such an impactful influence on this ever growing collective is something I am more than pleased with. I single handedly produce and promote all of Happy Healing’s events, create all of the hand made aromatherapy products and packaging, design my own website layouts, and currently teach/manage a nonaffiliated yoga studio during the week. Being a young black female entrepreneur in itself has its own nuance. I am 22 now and as I step further into womanhood and into studying my ancestral line, it feels more important now than ever to host a platform for other voices like mine to be heard. Especially those of other women and BIPOC creatives. If I can help make someone feel more seen and understood and uplifted, I am content.
What sets me apart from others is my unwavering devotion to collective healing in an authentically, raw manner. As a master healer (Number 11 in numerology) I understand that part of my journey here is to spread the word of these forgotten practices and to hold space for those seeking refuge. If we are not connected – to ourselves and to others – it is easy to stray from our divine path. I often will read motivational passages throughout my vinyasa yoga class offerings that I have written myself correlating to universal equinoxes or holidays or astrological events happening currently. I feel that this helps cultivate that sense of oneness within and a deeper understanding of the cosmos we call home.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is a sense of community. Who are we without camaraderie? When we are able to connect to a like-minded collective, we do not feel so alone within this uncertain and ever changing society. Along with a sense of belonging comes a sense of feeling understood. A sense of being apart of something bigger than yourself. That can be extremely empowering.
