Today we’d like to introduce you to Lynn Ollie.
Hi Lynn, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I began my career in the New York fashion design world. A friend brought me over to VH1 which opened the door to styling. From there, I started building connections and transitioned into costume design, where I found my real creative home. In the early 2000s, I moved to Los Angeles but my work still takes me wherever the story does.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When I look back, I can see that the road wasn’t always easy but I hardly noticed at the time. I was so excited to be doing work I cared about. Along with the long hours and challenges came a lot of fun and learning and creative expression. I kind of leaned into the challenges because I knew I was building a life around something I loved. That’s a pretty special thing.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As a costume designer, I work with actors, directors, and production designers to bring characters to life through costumes that feel real, purposeful, and right for the world we are building. Every choice in color, texture and even silhouette hints at a character’s personality, journey, and the world they live in. I am the most inspired by how clothing can tell us who a character is and where they come from before they say even one word. Costumes give us that first spark of insight into our cast of characters and the story that is about to unfold.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Art has always been a part of my life. As a kid, I was constantly creating from drawing and painting to sewing clothes for my Barbie dolls. In school, I gravitated toward anything hands-on and creative like weaving, ceramics and even photography. When I decided to go to art school, I don’t think it came as much of a surprise to anyone – it felt like the natural next step.
