Life & Work with Luna (Wanyue) Wang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Luna (Wanyue) Wang.

Luna (Wanyue) Wang

Luna (Wanyue), we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am a UX and product designer who started my professional design journey in 2015. I have worked at renowned companies like Amazon and Tencent in international settings, including Germany, the USA, and China. My areas of expertise in UX are primarily focused on AI/ML, data, and healthcare. In 2020, I finished my Master’s degree in Digital Media at New York University. I have a B.S. in Computer Science and a B.A. in Industrial Design.

My mixed education background in technology and design, combined with my diverse work experience, helps me better understand how design, technology, and engineering are closely connected and how to make use of them to benefit people and businesses. I always find emerging technologies and user-centric problem-solving processes fascinating. I’m passionate about understanding how these cutting-edge technologies can positively impact people’s daily lives. With my mixed educational background in technology and design, becoming a UX designer was a natural and exciting choice.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Despite encountering some occasional hiccups, I would describe my journey toward becoming a UX/product designer as relatively smooth. This assessment may be influenced by my optimistic nature. However, maintaining optimism is a crucial mindset for a designer, given the challenges that constantly pop up during day-to-day work. I’ve frequently had to navigate common challenges, such as finding the right balance between user needs and business objectives, operating within tight timelines and resource limitations, working with ambiguities, and engaging in continuous learning in a rapidly evolving industry.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My most recent experience was at Amazon Web Services (AWS) as a UX designer, where I played a critical role in the design of SageMaker, a leading AI/ML platform in the industry. As one of the founding members of the AWS SageMaker UX team, I had the privilege of leading the launch of several important projects. These contributions were instrumental in enhancing SageMaker’s capabilities and user experience.

My first project launch at AWS was in 2020; I designed the SageMaker Pipeline, the first purpose-built, easy-to-use CI/CD service for Machine Learning. In 2021, I led the end-to-end design process of the Universal Notebook project and used design thinking methods to help the team define core priorities and the product roadmap. The project includes a set of new capabilities that enable data engineering, data analytics, and ML workflows in one interface. Universal Notebook was launched at AWS re:Invent and received high recognition from the market. It significantly improved the work efficiency of target users and made a direct contribution to revenue. In 2022, I participated in the redesign of SageMaker Studio. The new design enhanced the overall user experience by improving navigation, discoverability, and the look and feel of the product. It led to a 47% increase in customer satisfaction scores.

I have a deep passion for designing AI/ML products. During my day-to-day work, I always use user-centric design methods to creatively untangle intricate user and business problems. In the meantime, I have developed a strong understanding of the machine learning lifecycle and technologies. To ensure a comprehensive and delightful outcome, I closely collaborate with cross-functional teams that span data scientists, engineers, designers, and management throughout the design and development phases.

Another project that I am proud of is my side project called ‘How Do You Feel About Your Scar’. Unlike my typical enterprise-facing design projects, ‘How Do You Feel About Your Scar’ represents a personal exploration. This project delves into the intimate experiences and emotions of individuals. It was inspired by my own experience with a scar from a childhood accident. The goal of this effort is to design an immersive, interactive experience that provides a path to emotional healing.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I’ve worked and lived in four different countries and many cities. Even though design is a universal language, my international work and life experience indeed enhanced my cultural sensitivity and broadened my perspective. Working with colleagues from different backgrounds enables me to design products that appeal to a global audience. I’ve encountered varying design principles, visual styles, and problem-solving approaches. This enriches my creative thinking and empowers me to create inclusive and globally resonant designs.
