Life & Work with Lotus Flow of Burbank

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lotus Flow.

Hi Lotus, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My name is Lotus Flow, a multi-genre music producer and songwriter raised in Shenzhen, China. I’ve always had a passion for music since I was 5 years old. I began classical training in piano and orchestral composition at a young age, laying the foundation for my musical journey. Later, I studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston, focusing on jazz, electronic production, and sound design.
At 19, during a pandemic gap year, I returned to China and signed with Universal Music Publishing China, becoming one of the youngest producers and writers to join the company. There, I quickly earned a reputation for crafting innovative music for top rappers, major television shows, and commercial campaigns.
After graduating in 2022, I moved to Los Angeles to build my own studio and creative team. With a global vision, I now explore cross-cultural fusion and progressive sound design across K-pop, hip-hop/R&B, and EDM, earning recognition for versatility and pushing the boundaries of contemporary music.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In an industry where women make up barely 2% of music producers worldwide, building a career as a young Chinese female producer in a Western market has been a journey into the unknown. I’ve had to prove myself step by step, collaborating with people whose perspectives and styles differed from my own to find my footing.
With few role models or mentors who shared my identity, I had to carve my own path, facing doubts, setbacks, and even having my work used without my knowledge. The hardest part has been the loneliness of often being “the only one” in the room.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My music incorporates the techniques and skills learnt at Berklee, as well as my own personal story telling and sound design taste. Recently, I contributed the track “1 of LOV” for the rising K-pop boy group XLOV, which reached the Top 4 on both the Korean and U.S. album charts. I also created the official Chinese version of the Billboard Afro/Electronic hit “Show Me Love” by Wizthemc and Tia Ray. In China’s hip-hop scene, the album I produced for Yitai Wang was awarded Best Chinese Hip-Hop Album of the Year. Additionally, the project I worked on for Japanese artist Santa “Prologue” reached the bestselling albums chart in China.
Working across these different markets and genres has been a defining part of my journey, allowing me to explore cross-cultural musical ideas and continually push the boundaries of my sound.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I enjoy listening to podcasts related to health, fitness, psychology, and personal growth. They help me feel focused and calm, and they also make me more productive in my work. For example, recently I’ve been listening to “Growth Mindset Psychology: The Science of Self-Improvement,” which offers practical insights that I can apply both personally and professionally.
