Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Chen.
Hi Lisa, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey began with a passionate interest in understanding and helping people. . I was intrigued by the intricate workings of the human mind, the way our past shapes our present and future, and the profound transformation that therapy can bring to individuals. Every day, I’m inspired by my clients’ strength and resilience, and I’m honored to be part of their journeys.
Along with my solid understanding of psychology, I also have deep knowledge of corporate culture. With degrees from the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business and from Harvard Business School, I have held executive-level roles in fields including investment banking, digital marketing, technology and business development. I know first-hand the pressures that come with professional success; as such, I’m uniquely positioned to help individuals both personally and professionally conquer these challenges. Through my extensive background in both psychology and corporate worlds, I am able to bring a multifaceted approach to helping people achieve their goals and realize their dreams.
I’ve come to understand that fulfillment is attained not through external accomplishments but rather through cultivating a deeper connection with oneself, one’s partner and the community at large. While professional success can provide satisfaction, true peace comes from tapping into our own unique values, purpose and place in the world. With my decades spent studying psychology and corporate structures alike, I’m passionate about helping others find this truth within themselves so they can unlock their full potential.
The transformation that therapy brings to people’s lives is something I’ve had the privilege of witnessing. It is my wish that everyone discovers the deep sense of peace that comes with understanding one’s own self-worth, purpose and role in life.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Far from it. Before my current career path, I felt a deep disconnect with the world around me – like something was missing, yet I could never quite define it. I excelled in my studies and career, achieving my parents’ Taiwanese immigrant dreams. Yet still, I found myself enmeshed in a world of crippling depression, anxiety, and burnout. It wasn’t until I started to examine my life choices through the lens of psychoanalytic practice that I finally began to take meaningful steps toward the career path which aligned with my values and goals.
Upon making the shift toward this career, I experienced something completely unexpected: a newfound appreciation for what life had to offer and an invigorated enthusiasm for the work I was doing. Nowadays, it’s my mission to help others find their own inner fulfillment too; after decades of experience in both psychology and corporate environments, I’ve been able to guide people along their own unique paths towards self-discovery and reach their full potential.
Though the journey so far has been filled with many struggles, every day brings with it a new appreciation for the resilience of people who have overcome these obstacles with strength and grace. It is one of the most satisfying experiences in life, seeing how far a person can come after overcoming struggles and embracing what life has to offer. I feel nothing but immense gratitude each day for being able to build a life around helping other people grow into their best selves.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Of course! I am a psychotherapist based in Hermosa Beach and offer virtual therapy services throughout California. I help individuals and couples unlock their full potential and achieve fulfillment in their lives. My practice is called Lisa Chen Therapy.
My specialty lies in utilizing cutting-edge techniques like Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) along with a psychodynamic approach. These techniques allow me to tailor the approach to each client’s individual needs. For example, those struggling with trauma or difficulties may benefit from EMDR while those dealing with negative self-talk can work toward resilience using IFS sessions. These powerful, innovative therapies have been proven to create long-term change that fosters satisfaction — a commitment that I take very seriously. With me, clients always come away feeling empowered.
In addition to individuals, I specialize in couples therapy, drawing on my own experience as a married couple and rigorous training. I understand the unique struggles that come with relationships and I’m dedicated to helping others create successful, lasting partnerships. My expertise lies in addressing common relationship problems such as communication breakdowns, lack of understanding, emotional disconnection, traumatic past experiences and more. Using methods like Gottman Method Couples Therapy and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), I provide a space for couples to talk through difficult issues and reconnect with each other in meaningful ways. If you’re going through a tough time in your relationship, it’s important to take the time to reflect on what needs to change. Patience with yourself and your partner is paramount as you work towards developing healthier relationship dynamics — be sure not to forget the little things that often make all the difference!
At the heart of my practice is a collaborative approach rooted in compassion. Providing clients with an environment free from judgment enables them to explore their true potential and pursue growth opportunities safely. It’s truly inspiring to witness the transformation my clients experience every single day — it’s an honor for me to support them on this journey toward success! Whether you are looking for virtual psychotherapy sessions or need help overcoming obstacles to happiness and success right here in Hermosa Beach, I’m here to help you get there.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Becoming a psychotherapist can be an incredibly rewarding journey, but it’s important to remember that it takes time and the right approach to master the field. It’s essential to take the time to understand your own passions, interests, and goals so you can make educated decisions along the way.
Do your research diligently before jumping in — which might include attending training, events related to psychotherapy and networking with colleagues in the same field, and seeing your own therapist. By doing this work upfront, you’re setting yourself up for success later down the line.
When it comes to client care, it’s critical to remember that no two individuals are the same. Ensuring an atmosphere of comfort and safety free from judgment requires careful consideration when crafting treatment plans and approaches tailored to each person’s unique needs. You may also find it helpful to specialize in one or several types of therapies during the early stages of your career — such as Internal Family Systems (IFS) or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). This allows for more expertise in certain areas as you gain more experience over time.
Above all else, never give up on your dreams, even if setbacks occur! With dedication and persistence, you’ll discover that becoming a psychotherapist is an incredibly fulfilling journey.
