Life & Work with Laura Lacy aka Rabbit

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Lacy.

Laura Lacy

Hi Laura, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve been playing music (or singing at least) since I was a little girl. The band as it is now, Rah Rah Rabbit, was formed in 2022 with my cousins and dear friends to play our first show in what used to be Mr. T’s Room at the Highland Park Bowl. I’ve been going by the name Rabbit since 2008 when I first played in a rabbit costume on Halloween at the Art’s District Healing Center. The name stuck, but I moved on from the band I was playing in when I first started. I’ve delved into many different genres throughout my musical journey, but I feel very comfortable writing in this Americana/Folk/Country/Rock n Roll style that fits best for this band. I’m just grateful these guys are along with me on this ride, willing and happy to play my songs.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Making music has always felt to me like a means to survive. I don’t think I would’ve gotten through some of the hardest things in my life if it weren’t for music. But there were times I wasn’t sure I would be able to play anymore. My music career hasn’t always been successful, and life has brought me many challenges and lessons. After many turbulent ups and downs with my former band and becoming a mother, pursuing music in any way or form seemed like a pipe dream. But I can’t stop writing. Those changes in my life actually inspired me even more than I would have ever known. Through it all, I’m grateful for every bit of it. To have a full band playing my songs on some of these amazing stages, I had never dreamed of playing is surreal. Working as a single mom trying to create art and cultivate a music community can be tiring to say the least, but it is always fulfilling.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We are an Americana/Folk/Blues/Rock n Roll band in Los Angeles. We will be releasing our first EP, “Ghosts” on February 2nd, 2024 and we are so excited to share it with the world! We are celebrating it at the Silverlake Lounge on 2/2 with a free show at 7pm featuring Rosy Nolan and Ryan Hahn. We’ve played from The Echo in Los Angeles to the Rustic Theater in Idyllwild and many places in between. Our goal as a band is to bring people together, get their boots stomping and hearts swooning, and give them a show they won’t forget.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I’m always inspired by other people who create or tell their stories. I love people who continue to share great art with the world. I love radio. I love to listen to people sharing in real-time, like I’m part of some cosmic web of people all connecting through one solitary experience at the same moment. KXLU, KCSN, and KCRW all have some amazing shows that really work to bring people great music and information in Southern California. The Wildwood Flower Radio Hour is a fantastic source of local country and American music. I also love listening to Ben Vaughn’s The Many Moods of Ben Vaughn because I always tend to learn something new about music every time I listen.
