Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Brewster.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born and raised in Grand Rapids. Michigan, and growing up in this beautiful city full of art and culture has impacted me greatly. I was brought up in the Church which really built the foundation of the artist I am today. From singing in the choir, playing drums, then to playing the saxophone really taught me how to act as a performer with knowing how to speak/engage with the audience and express myself musically. I was also involved in music in school which benefitted me greatly to network and build relationships with my peers and mentors through music. With being involved in these things, I continued to grow as a person and musically. To see growth, it motivates a person to want to achieve the goals they have placed in their life which then creates a drive to want to be better everyday which is what happened to me at a young age. From then, with mentorship from my parents and family to keep God first and my teachers continuing to help get me better at my craft, I have been blessed abundantly with opportunities to perform, teach, and study music at the collegiate level.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Well, going through any career path is never going to be a “smooth road”, but when doing something you love and putting blood, sweat, tears into it, it seems easy. Which is how it has been for me. I have been through different challenges such as feeling drained, being impatient, ego conflict, feeling that I’ve been stuck in the same place musically, etc. But, what has helped me is seeing those challenges as learning experiences. Struggles and challenges are only bad if you view them in that perspective, which is why seeing the good in situations and learning from that will help to not deal with reoccurring problems. A quote that I live by is “A wiseman is always learning” and that quote has helped me through all my trials and tribulations.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Saxophonist, Composer, and Arranger. Being an artist, what I try to do the most in my music is reach out to others mentally and emotionally. Music is a language that everyone understands no matter your race, ethnicity, or religion. Music is used as a comfort zone for all people no matter how you feel. It is also one of the most strongest ways to guide each other to peace which is what I try to do in my music. What has gotten me to where I am professionally is keeping god first, keeping my spectrum open, having connections with musicians, and being guided through people that I hold close and trust. Something I am most proud is my album that I put out last year entitled “For the Culture”. It is an EP with 4 tracks of songs that I grew up listening to and that I feel has a good representation of African American culture. Which is why the album name is a dedication to my culture.
What are your plans for the future?
For the future, what I am most excited for is continuing to grow musically, to perform, and try my best to reach out and help people through my music which will forever be something I am excited for. I am also looking forward to studying music daily at this collegiate level and soon get my degree. But mostly, I am planning to start recording other projects which will be announced soon…
