Life & Work with Kenzie Burke

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenzie Burke.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?

Kenzie is a passionate entrepreneur and designer of the burgeoning clothing line BRÛLÉ. Evoking the etymology of “brulé” – an area destroyed by fire — Kenzie, too, has emerged from the ashes of her past in the wellness space, equipped with entrepreneurial gusto and exacting creative eye.

Always a dauntless creator, she moved to Los Angeles when she was 18, working fastidiously as a retail associate and styling assistant. Soon after, she fell into the wellness space, in which she was able to grow a substantial platform. Yet, despite her success within the industry, she felt compelled to use her learnings to launch her lifelong passion project, BRÛLÉ — the culmination of years of manifestation and hard work.

As founder of BRÛLÉ, Kenzie aspires to evoke a timeless aesthetic into every article of clothing she designs, adhering to “quality over quantity”. BRÛLÉ’s namesake stems from its definitional association with fire. Each collection is a time capsule, drawing on inspiration, art, and elevated spirituality to imbue each piece with undeniable energy.

Kenzie wields this energy to inspire the masses, sharing her entrepreneurial journey and documenting the day-to-day production of BRÛLÉ on her personal Instagram channel. A self-proclaimed “old soul,” Kenzie’s energy and living example of determination and hard work naturally helps others unearth their fullest potential and step boldly into their future.

Three years ago, I grew a large following in the wellness space. Within that three-year span, I wrote three books, created and developed an app, hosted a podcast, and had a superfood line of biodynamic coffee & cacao nibs.

Ultimately, I loved wellness –– but loved it for myself. So I made a bold decision to completely step back, go ‘offline’, and re-create my life. I started over. Financially, physically, mentally, and emotionally. Doing this has taken SO much courage, willpower, and growth.

Not only behind the scenes, but I have gone through this transition publically. It has taken a lot of pushing my ego aside and listening to within to do this.

Through the space I gave myself to ‘re-set’, and feeling humbled by the feeling of ‘starting over,’ I have emerged as who I know I want to be. I know what I want my life to look and feel like. I am entirely going for my ultimate dreams now –– you could say my life is JUST beginning. 

I will do anything for BRÛLÉ. As a business owner –– it’s your entire life. You have to want it. It consumes your time. You never *really* have a moment off duty. And, of course, it’s not easy financially, especially in the beginning when you are one-person with a dream in your heart. You get put through the washing machine every day.

I push myself constantly to upgrade, uplevel, etc. If you want different results –– you have to push yourself every day. To grow, learn, do better, and be the 1%—a constant evolution. I have big dreams and can’t wait to look back one day and be proud of what I created. The bravery I gave it. The all I put in.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?

Well, first of all, I have learned many lessons. Over the last five years, I have put myself through the ‘school of life.’ A crash course. I have learned from my own mistakes. I am grateful for the lessons I learned when I had my wellness business because I feel much more mindful and present in my decisions with BRÛLÉ. 

The start-up phase (where I am right now) can HURT. There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to business success, and I have to CREATE my life every day. Believe, push through the unknown, take financial ‘risks’, and trust myself. Every penny I make goes back into the business and then SOME. I get 18 ‘no’s’ until I find a yes. It’s not just designing clothing (that’s my favorite part). It’s marketing, the production of the clothing, the admin, the thinking ahead, and the finances it takes to scale. The trust that it will all pay off one day.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?

I am a firm believer in ‘quality over quantity’. 

Each collection has a thought-out campaign infused with a vision and vital creativity. This brings forth a lasting energy that you FEEL in each article of clothing.

Each piece of clothing is imagined and designed by Kenzie, who holds a strong vision of only creating timeless pieces that will remain a part of your daily clothing rotation for years to come.

All BRÛLÉ pieces are made in the USA – designed in California by Kenzie herself and produced locally in Los Angeles.

BRÛLÉ places the quality and longevity of our clothing above all else. The result is a style that is, at once, as undone as it is refined.

Any big plans?

I am going to keep expanding BRÛLÉ – each collection dropping more pieces. I aim to create a world-renowned brand. I will continue to create campaigns that make NOISE in the world. My blinders are on. I create the vision for each collection from within, and I hope to turn many heads.

My ultimate dream is to expand it into baby clothing – brule baby…so BRÛLÉ can be a whole thing for the entire family. Classy, refined, simple, stunning. I love simplicity and class – I want my future kids to live in neutrals and high-quality fabrics and to be in sync with me. Aesthetics matter to me. Clearly.
