Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelvin Batiste.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am one of the pioneering Plus-Size Male Models in fashion. I booked my first modeling job back in 2017. It was for an online workwear company and they were searching for a plus-size male model. So I went to the casting, the clothes fit great, and I was booked that next day. On set, the photographer gave me high compliments and encouraged me to consider pursuing modeling full-time. Although there wasn’t much of a market for plus men at that time, I still took the photographer’s advice and begin reaching out to local LA photographers asking if they would consider shooting me. I began to build my portfolio over the next three years and in fall of 2020 I booked my first big commercial modeling job with Apple. Soon after, I booked a major beauty campaign with Benefit Cosmetics. That led me to getting signed with my ‘mother’ agent, LA Models. Fast forward to today, I can proudly say that I am a full-time working model. I have worked with so many incredible photographers and currently the face of campaigns for Nike, AmazonGo, and Ulta.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The idea of a plus male model in fashion is a new concept for many people, but thanks to the body positivity movement, we are bringing awareness to the masses and being represented in more spaces. I am confident that we will continue to see more inclusivity in fashion & media.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I was most inspired after reading “The Chiffon Trenches” by Andre Leon Talley. The only figure in fashion who resonated with me was Andre and after reading his memoir I felt even more connected to him. His presence was just as powerful as his stories. I am captivated by his life’s journey in fashion as a black American man and his love for the people who made up that world. His genuine passion for beauty and fashion is unmatched. We are not celebrating Andre enough.
