Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Oswald.
Katie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
As a kid, I always had a point and shoot camera on me and loved documenting everything. Dressing up all crazy, my friends and I used to create DIY backdrops, throw on way too much makeup and have fashion shoots in my bedroom. Probably a pretty common childhood memory. Flash forward a few years later, I went on to be really bad at my film photography class in Highschool and got frustrated with the art form all together. I can’t recall what changed but I decided to get my BFA in fine art photography when I went to college. I guess it was a challenge for me to get better at something I kind of sucked at but loved. Over the years, I’ve had experience shooting weddings, portraits, interiors, lifestyle and travel. This leads us to now, which is where I’ve become more involved in commercial work. Back in the day, there used to be an obvious difference between the fine art and the commercial photography “look” and now there are so many intersections. I absolutely love it. Editorial fashion spreads are so artfully shot now, I’m just in awe of all the talented people out there. Okay okay, I digress. So how did Apt 5 Creative get started anyway?
During 2020, brands that weren’t selling online yet had to scramble and get online fast. Business owners who resisted this before were now coming around to the idea. Everyone was refreshing their branding, websites and generally starting to show up online more. Thus, Apt 5 Creative was born. I am a small business owner much like my clients and I love connecting with them on that level. Asking the right questions to get the desired result is a wonderful challenge and I love problem-solving. Above all, it is so rad to see how high-quality images can increase sales for a client and elevate their online presence.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I had been what you would call a “natural light photographer” for so long and thinking I was pretty great until I started to get back into artificial lighting which I hadn’t worked with since college. I really think it has overall made me better at my craft.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in branding, product and lifestyle photography. I’m probably most proud of myself for sticking with it, magic starts to happen when you believe in yourself. Sounds cheesy but true. You start to align with the right clients and people who appreciate your talents.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was a weird kid, pretty shy and had a very vivid imagination.
