Life & Work with Kate Brunotts

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Brunotts.

Kate Brunotts

Hi Kate, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up always really into music in some capacity– I was always in choir, playing guitar, and recording covers on my iPod touch for YouTube. Once I was in high school, I learned I could produce music entirely on my own, and I was hooked. I planned to move to NYC as soon as I graduated with a vague notion of doing something involving music or dogs and saved up as much as I could before finishing high school. I moved out the same weekend I graduated, moved to the city and worked a bunch of odd jobs, saw a lot of new places before finally landing on my feet as a full-time audio engineer and music producer. My artist project has always followed me suit, encapsulating my experiences and emotions as I move from one stage to the next.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There have been plenty of times where I wasn’t sure everything was going to pan out the way I hoped, and my path still surprises me. All I can do is try to do my best, follow my desires, and be the best I can for the relationships and loved ones in my life. I’m still a super unknown musician, but to receive some validation from some of my heroes like Grimes and FKA Twigs has really helped me believe in moving forward, even if I don’t know exactly where that leads.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a music producer and artist mostly known for my songs. I’m most proud of my ability to learn, grow, and keep going over time. I am just like anyone else but unique in my own perspective and collage of influences. I strive to make something that pushes the boundaries of pop music.

How do you define success?
Success is 1) having enough to meet your basic needs and 2) consistently challenging yourself to improve your craft and relationship to the world around you.
