Life & Work with Kaleb Sweeney

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaleb Sweeney.

Kaleb Sweeney

Hi, Kaleb. We’re so excited to have you on the platform. Before we ask about your work life, you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up in an artist’s home. My mom, a self-taught fine artist, supported us my whole life as a painter and designer. I grew up going to gallery shows, doing my homework in her studio, playing with paints, and using my hands. I only thought I would go in the same direction once I graduated high school and realized how second nature it was for me to search for art and inspiration in my everyday life. I decided to apply to an art school to further my interests and pursue a career in art and design. As I got familiar with careers in design, I found myself gravitating to the world of motion graphics. Motion graphics is a broad design area spanning commercial advertising, TV and film, event spaces, and more. I started experimenting with the tools available and quickly found my niche—practical effects cinematography. The art of capturing art through the camera lens is to be used for all the areas of design mentioned. I offer my creative services as a freelance designer for various clients, making art for immersive art spaces, creating content for social media pages, producing music videos and film title sequences, and more.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story. Has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
The life of an artist is anything but smooth. While I naturally gravitated into this field, procuring clients and finding my footing in the creative space has been challenging. With content creation and the world of digital art getting increasingly saturated, it isn’t easy to make a name for yourself and find opportunities that fit your niche. I aim to work with various design studios to create awe-inspiring art for people to experience and share. Storytelling and creating experiences are my passions; I search for opportunities like this every day.

Thanks for sharing that. Please tell us a bit more about your work.
As I mentioned before, my specialty is practical effects cinematography. The art of capturing assets and footage through a camera and then altering them in post-production software to create visuals for various uses. What I love about practical effects is the subliminal feeling you get experiencing these visuals. At first glance, one may assume my content is computer-generated, using particle effects or computer simulations. But the reality is, most of what you see in my work is exactly what I produced in real life and was looking at through the camera lens.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I am still searching for clients and opportunities to create immersive experiences and content that leaves viewers with an everlasting impression. I love bringing people’s ideas to life and creating an unforgettable experience. If any of our readers are interested in motion graphics and the specialties that practical effects have to offer, I would absolutely love to chat!
