Life & Work with Juliette Jeffers of Encino

Today we’d like to introduce you to Juliette Jeffers

Hi Juliette, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am an actor, writer, director and producer. I knew at an early age that I wanted to be in showbiz. I went to the High School of Performing Arts in NYC, which was based on the movie, Fame. I moved out to LA in the early nineties to pursue acting. There have been bumps along the way but I continued to stay on the path. I started out as an actor but transformed into an artist.
I realized along the way that I’m in this for life. I’m a creative being who lives, eats and sleeps self expression through art. And that means whether I get paid for it or not, I’m always creating. I believe that mentality, coupled with my work ethic, has played a crucial part in why I’ve been successful in this industry.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When I first moved out to LA, I started booking guest spots on TV pretty quickly. I appeared on shows, such as The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Martin and Murder She Wrote. I was working fairly consistently until 1996 when my brother passed away. Within six weeks of him dying, all of my joints were inflamed and in pain. I ended up being diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis, which is an autoimmune disease. That slowed me down for a bit but I stayed on my path.
Years later, my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s so I moved back home to NY to become her full time caregiver. I didn’t stop acting but my choices were limited to local short term gigs. I would even bring my mother to auditions when I didn’t have anyone to cover for me at home. I was determined to stay in the game!
I often think about where I’d be in my career if those major events didn’t happen to me. And I’ve played the comparison game as well. I realized that those thoughts do not serve me. My journey is unique to me and it’s not a race. I truly believe that everything happens for a reason. I am who I am because of my experiences. So I am grateful for it all.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have been a working actor in Film, TV and Theatre for many years. Currently, I am recurring on Tulsa King on Paramount Plus and Shondaland’s The Residence, which will start streaming on Netflix in 2025.
I have five solo plays that I’ve written and performed. The one I’m most proud of is Batman and Robin in the Boogie Down, which is based on my late brother and I growing up in the Bronx. Fun Fact… I was nominated for a Drama Desk Award in NYC and I was in the same category as John Legiuzamo. He ended up winning but it was an honor to be mentioned in the same sentence as him!
Other than acting, I coach other actors on their solo plays. I’m very passionate about helping others tell their stories. It’s one of the most healing things we can do as artists. My family is from St. Kitts and Nevis in the Caribbean and I recently started teaching acting there… specifically in Nevis. My mission is to assist in the development of their film industry, so they can be empowered to tell their stories as well.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I believe that success should not be defined by others. It’s defined by ourselves. We set a standard for ourselves and if we live up to it, we are successful. If we are truly happy and at peace, we are successful. If we are proud of our accomplishments, we are successful. I know for myself, I’m always striving for more but once in a while, I have to pause and reflect on everything that I’ve achieved. Once I do that, I feel a huge sense of gratitude and pride.
