Life & Work with Julia Walck

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Walck.

Hi Julia, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve always had a love for art and design for as long as I can remember. Everything from fine art to interior design to signage from a vintage motel on the side of the road all excited me.

My original major in college was Textile Design; one I quickly changed to Graphic Design as I found it to be more inclusive for my style with so many various ways I could apply my skill set. I still LOVE patterns and really enjoy that I can incorporate them into my work today. I’m even launching patterned collage wrapping paper in my shop on 11/4/22!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road here has definitely not been a smooth one. If there had been road signs along the way they might have said things like, “artist’s block ahead”, or “imposter syndrome under construction” and they’d lead into off-road dirt path detours with uneven pavement.

A big struggle along the way for me has been art theft. I’ve had multiple designs knocked off and/or outright stolen from me and sold by big and small brands alike. It’s exhausting to keep up with. And takes away my energy that I’d rather be using in a creative fashion.

I’m a huge advocate for artists standing up for themselves, and I even wrote a whole blog post about what to do if your art gets stolen in the hopes it may be able to help others. (https://www.juliawalck.com/blog/what-to-do-if-your-artwork-gets-stolen)

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a collage artist and design director. I make vintage-inspired art, barware and accessories for anyone looking to add some fun to their day-to-day.

I infuse humor and conceptual thinking into everything I do, including the products on my site like disco ball bar coasters, heart-shaped stir sticks with clever sayings on the sides, and in the subject matter of my collage work.

I’m proud that I get to be myself and have fun doing it. If my designs make someone else happy, that’s a huge perk!

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My husband Jackson has always been my biggest fan. He puts up with my messiness when I leave photoshoot props laying around, bounces ideas off of me when I’m at a crossroads on where to go for a project, and is just so, so supportive. He’s been there every step of the way and I know always will be.
