Life & Work with Joaquin Su Curiel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joaquin Su Curiel.

Hi Joaquin, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started my filmmaking journey at the young age of 12 by making stop-motion videos. Never knew it was going to be my passion and my career. One day a friend of mine showed me how to do stop-motion by pressing play and pause on an old cellphone and I took it as my hobby, learn how to get better at it, and established my mini-production company/studio in a spare room in my house.

Later in life, I started taking photography in events, weddings, and doing small music videos for musician friends. Worked for several years in a production company named Torofilms, which is still my family and one of the biggest inspirations to who I am.

Now I moved to LA after graduating a master’s degree in filmmaking and with over 100 projects directed I go day by day finding ways to create more in my craft and directing as much as I possibly can.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been an okay road, but as with every road there are slopes, curves, and unexpected situations, but on the most part the biggest struggles are within me, trying to let go of perfectionism and letting go of my own expectations of myself. Like most artists I am my worst audience, I tend to like everything I do in the moment I do it, but a month later I watch everything I do and think back and wish I could do it differently just to make it more and more perfect.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a director and filmmaker that specializes in Music Videos, commercials and narrative films. While I started as an assistant director for commercials, what distinguishes me from others is having that fast-paced editing with interesting cuts to create narrative film making feel like a music video or a commercial.

I have always have a special bond with music, even though it’s not my forte, and I found the best connection to the music through film, and with this everything I write, direct and create is linked to music in some way. This connection of film and music creates a style that is really interesting as it feels like the storytelling is a collection of songs and images supported by the actual music in them.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Being able to achieve what you want to achieve, it doesn’t matter if your goal is simple, complex, easy, or hard. Being able to achieve your goals is what I consider success.
