Today we’d like to introduce you to Jewaun Word.
Hi Jewaun, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Atlanta (Zone 6) made me into the person I am today. I honestly started singing when I was around 3 or 4 years old but started releasing songs at around 17 or 18 years old. I didn’t have many things I wanted to do/pursue when it came to a career but I knew I wanted to doing something with music. Before I graduated high school in 2013 – I remembered my mom encouraging me to start modeling because I had a lot of anger inside from the environment I was in and she wanted me to be more confident. I always focused on everyone else instead of myself because I knew my current situation wasn’t the best. I grew up with a lot of negative emotions surrounding me and even had to tolerate people having a perception of who I was when I didn’t even know. I was touched by another boy when I was 6 or 7 when we visited my family in Flint, MI during the summer. That had me trying to figure a few things out because I had no idea what happened but I was able to get educated in my own way, find a conclusion to what happened to me and started living my life the way I wanted. I used to listen to my favorite artist “Sam Cooke” whenever I could because his music helped me find an understanding of what I needed to do. I feel like everyone goes through something in life but some are just not strong enough to block out the noise and focus on what matters to them. I raised myself mentally from a young age so I knew I would have to figure stuff out on my own from the jump.
Once I graduated, I took a whole year off before I noticed I was in a consistent pattern of going nowhere. I knew it had to be music but I just needed to figure out how. I started freelance modeling at the beginning of 2014 and would send hundreds of emails each day on 3 to 4 electronic devices. I then signed with TNG Models in Las Vegas in 2015 to start my journey in modeling with the only agency that took a chance on me. After that, I started to show interest in Fashion weeks around the world. I didn’t want to settle for just NY fashion week and LA fashion week. I wanted to see what I haven’t seen before. So that’s when I came across Seoul Fashion Week in Korea in 2016. I fell in love instantly and couldn’t even believe that was my first trip overseas alone. I was so interested in what they were doing that I ended up meeting so many amazing and creative people from all over the world. I then listened to some Krnb singers and thought why don’t I see if I can make music with them. I then knew that this wouldn’t be my last stop. Music is what makes me happy and being able to share that with people in different counties is truly amazing to me. When I worked with them, I am always able to grow in my own way because we bring different styles to the table. I did have a language barrier in some way but I never let that stop me. Once I got a taste of a new world, I then travel to Paris and Taiwan to see what kind of artists/creatives I could find there. I didn’t do it all alone though and could never say I did. Every producer, artist, engineer and creative I have met along the way has been a part of this amazing journey. This is only the beginning. Traveling back and forth from LA, Vegas, Korea, Atlanta, Taiwan and Paris has been amazing. I can’t wait to see all the places I go to next and what type of encounters I’ll have. I truly can say that I am happy and without my experiences, I wouldn’t be the way I am now.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
You know the entertainment world is full of ups and downs but I just want everyone to be happy and leave all the negative things behind. Unfortunately, that is not an easy task for some. The road has been difficult for me in modeling because they say I’m too tall but yet I still book all over the world. In music, they want my talent but want to control what I release and that is something I won’t compromise on. I truly believe in being real and honest with who I am because I’m not asking for the world to like me. I’m just being me and living my best life while promoting self-love and self-care. I have no regrets and nothing in my past is holding me back. When you are truly happy nothing in the world could ever break you if you truly love what you do. I’m just a truly unbothered soul and refuse to entertain negativity. No matter how my obstacles come my way God will help me through it if I need him.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an independent Rnb singer, songwriter and model. I create sounds that I like when I feel like it and try to learn everything I can about music. I want to use rnb in all the music I do. I also work full-time at a spa company called Burke Williams spa in California. I am a supervisor and they are a huge supporters of what I do. I am able to give 100% in all that I do but the goal is to only do music/modeling going forward. In 2023, I am making a huge decision in regard to my journey in music and modeling. I am proud of everything I’ve done over the past few years but my recent interview with a Korean clothing brand called SHIRTER was my highlight for the end of 2022. What sets me apart is that I’m the realest person you will ever meet. I can’t be anyone but myself at all times. The music I create is different because there is no lane that I can’t be in. I am never going to stop learning. I can only grow more and more from here.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Honesty. If I didn’t keep it real, no one would know what I was thinking or what I wanted to say. I’m still working on my empathy but I don’t hide anything from the people I care about in the industry or my life. They know who they are. I show love differently from most – so either they get it or they don’t. If I don’t mess with you – I will make that clear but my intention is always a good one. I can dislike the things you do but they doesn’t stop this hood guy from loving you at a distance.
