Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennie Gold.
Hi Jennie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve been singing pretty much forever. I won’t bore you with the antics of a typical suburban theatre nerd, but that’s what I was. I was always performing or making some sort of commotion. My family will tell you that our house was too loud until the day I moved out. I studied Acting at Marymount Manhattan University in New York, took private voice and guitar lessons, and started writing music. After graduation, I followed some friends out to LA. In the first few years of living here, I did everything from play the tambourine in a peace-loving hippie revival band to sing as a June Carter-esque character in a rockabilly band. How such creative and professional, even Grammy award-winning, artists could work hard and still have so much fun helped me learn the ropes and inspired me to start focusing on my own music.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Quarantine was a gift in a very nasty wrapping. I finally had no excuse but to sit with myself and figure out my priorities. I wasn’t making my own music because I was afraid I had nothing new to say. I love the Martha Graham quote about your only job being to “keep your channel open” and what kept closing mine was my own judgment about what I was capable of creating. Thanks to the support of teachers, friends, and former bandmates, I started working through these to write and record my own songs. The hardest part is daring to put the time and effort into something and know it might turn out totally different than the utopian version in my head and that it might be even better. I think a lot of artistic struggles come down to a few basic archetypal plot lines, and mine is: I am my own worst enemy, and I have to befriend her.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a musician. I’m known for my vocal versatility, my keen ear for harmony, and my messy bun. My songs are honest, catchy, and soulful. I just released two singles (“No Other Man” and “Insatiable”) and have a gig lined up at Tr!p Santa Monica on Friday, January 14th!
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I do vaginal weightlifting and not the kind inspired by Goop. It’s an ancient Taoist practice used to strengthen chi flow throughout your body so you can put it towards whatever you want, like creative pursuits. Plus, strengthening your pelvic floor is excellent for your voice!
