Life & Work with Jason Thomas Gordon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Thomas Gordon.

Jason Thomas Gordon

Hi Jason, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am musician/screenwriter, who sings and plays drums in the LA rock band Kingsize. The band has scored two TV theme songs and had our music placed in shows like Shameless on Showtime and videos games such as Rockband3.

Having grown up playing drums, I only became the singer of the band a few years back and was shocked to find there was no resource on how to do this brutal job night-after-night. So, I decided to reach out to the greatest singers of our time and speak to them about the one thing they’re never asked about: their voices!

My interviews became a book called “The Singers Talk,” which came out last Sept. through Permuted Press/Simon and Schuster. The book features interviews with:

Willie Nelson, Tony Bennett, Smokey Robinson, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Nicks, Mavis Staples, Roger Daltrey, Chuck D, Thom Yorke, Emmylou Harris, Robert Smith, Chrissie Hynde, Lionel Richie, Norah Jones, Michael Stipe, Brittany Howard, Aaron Neville, Rod Stewart, Steve Perry, Ann Wilson, Patty Griffin, Nick Cave, Roger Waters, Dionne Warwick, John Lydon, LeAnn Rimes, Bryan Adams, Michael McDonald, Ozzy Osbourne, Joan Jett, Brian Johnson, Jeff Tweedy, Chan Marshall, Karen O, and Perry Farrell to name a few…

Plus: Clive Davis on Whitney Houston, Jimmy Iovine on Tom Petty, Wendy Melvoin on Prince, T Bone Burnett on Roy Orbison, Steve Cropper on Otis Redding, Eddie Kramer on Hendrix, Al Schackman on Nina Simone, Little Steven on Little Richard, Tom Morello on Chris Cornell, Andy Wallace on Jeff Buckley, Butch Vig on Kurt Cobain, and Nile Rodgers on David Bowie… etc.

All my proceeds from the book will benefit the kids and families at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital through a campaign I started called Music Gives to St. Jude Kids. Music Gives reaches out to bands, fans, and everyone in between to support the hospital’s lifesaving mission. St. Jude was founded by my grandfather, Danny Thomas, in 1962 in Memphis, TN. The hospital leads the way the world understands, treats, and defeats childhood cancer, and at St. Jude, no family ever receives a bill for their treatment, travel, housing, or food.

“The Singers Talk” has recently become a podcast, which is being produced by Double Elvis Productions and Volume.com, and will begin streaming within the next couple months.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing is smooth is show business. It takes a lot of discipline, dedication, and the ability to stomach rejection.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I make music, I write film and TV, and I work to raise money and awareness for the kids and families at St. Jude. I can’t explain it, but they all fit together somehow. They’re all a part of the same song to me,

What do you think about happiness?
I’m happiest creating, being onstage or in the studio, making music, writing something I’m excited about, being with the people I love, having some good vegan food, going to concerts, movies, standup shows, Laker games…
