Life & Work with Jamie Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Johnson.

Hi Jamie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
When I was in my mid to late 20’s, I was starting to realize I had become disconnected from myself. This realization slow and over the course of several years. Through trials and conflicts, I started to see that I didn’t know how to listen to my intuition and my voice and trust it. During this time, I started taking self-portraits, which ended up being a beautiful way to start reconnecting with myself as well as focus on a creative outlet. As the self-portraits in my home and underwater in my pool became an exciting ritual for me, I started to share them on Instagram in 2014, where I began to connect with other artists and others that just wanted to express themselves deeply through imagery and not feel alone in that. Over the past several years, I started doing shoots for others, creating space for being seen, connecting with their body and nature, and feeling liberated.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I haven’t had any major struggles. The main thing I would say is that everything has taken a lot longer to grow and build than I thought it would, and there has had to be a big learning curve in owning my own business. In hindsight though, everything has happened in its perfect timing, nothing came too quick before I was ready for it, and I trust that is part of the journey and process.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in immersive portrait sessions for anyone and everyone that allow for deeper connection with the body through movement and play in nature and underwater. The result is a range of delicate, strong, liberated, and intimate portraiture that allows the subject to see themself through a new lens. The sessions are an experience in and of themselves. We usually set aside a good chunk of the day to spend together to play, either underwater in a private heated pool that I provide or secluded in nature. The focus is on having fun, letting go of societal pressures, and connecting deeper within. I am in love with seeing someone’s essence and energy, and the physical body is not as much the focus even though most of my work is nude. Since this is how I found my own liberation, it’s the most exciting thing to me to be able to create the space and images for others to experience something similar.

I love shooting both digital and film on all the shoots. Taking our time to create art together is something I highly value, and that the client feels just as much a part of the creative process. The result is fine art that many people end up printing art pieces of and creating an album as a keepsake.

The moments I feel most proud is when someone says after a shoot that they see themselves in a whole new light, feet more embodied, and are more confident. There’s just not much better than that!

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
To create a space where people can feel liberated as well as create beautiful art as a keepsake to remember their experience. Also, to create art that resonates with energy that elevates and heals.
