Today we’d like to introduce you to Jag Savant
Hi Jag, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I didn’t set up to be a photographer nor drafted my career to be one. However, life had a surprise in store for me – Photography. While pursuing my animation and visual effects graduation, I started working part-time as a social media executive and photographer at iPink The Color Of Health, where I comprehended my gift of taking beautiful pictures. Shortly after that, I began my career as one of the youngest photographers to work in the Indian Film and Fashion industry. In the early days of starting my career, the challenge I faced was asking for money for the work I was doing as a self-employed photographer. I started my career as a self-employed photographer when I was 20. I had no knowledge of how the industry worked and how to price my products; none of my family members or friends were in the same industry. Experiences like these have shaped me to ensure I take advance payments and make the clients sign a deal. Something that has always set me apart from the other photographers in the industry is the connection that I build with the clients. I add a personal touch to every project that I work on. I grew up in Mumbai, a city with the most diversity, which enabled me to understand the client’s needs and backgrounds.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
t definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but I believe growth often emerges from challenges. One struggle that stands out vividly is learning how to ask for fair compensation for my work. To navigate this, I enlisted the help of a close friend to act as my “manager.” She handled discussions about payment and ensured clients fulfilled their commitments in a timely manner.
Many of the people hiring me were acquaintances, which added a personal layer to the transactions. Some expected discounted rates, which made it even more difficult to assert the value of my work. I started my career at the age of 20, with no formal education in photography and no real understanding of how to price my services. I was entirely on my own, with no family or friends in the industry to guide me.
Yet, despite the challenges, I was young, driven, and full of aspirations. I knew I wanted to be a photographer and carve out a space for myself in the creative industry, and I was determined to make it happen.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Here’s an expanded and polished version of your text:
I am a photo artist who uses photography as a medium to tell stories that challenge perceptions and ignite meaningful conversations. My work is deeply rooted in my identity as a girl from India, drawing inspiration from my cultural heritage, spiritual beliefs, and personal experiences.
In addition to my conceptual work, I have been a portrait photographer for over eight years. What I love most about portraiture is the human connection it fosters. Each portrait I capture tells a unique story—a story that has never been told before. I believe that every individual carries a narrative within them, shaped by their experiences, emotions, and dreams. My goal as a photographer is to bring those hidden stories to light, creating images that are not just visually striking but also deeply resonant.
For me, photography is not just about the final image but about the interaction, the energy exchanged, and the trust built during the process. I find immense joy in connecting with people and uncovering the essence of who they are through my lens. It’s this shared vulnerability and mutual discovery that makes portrait photography such a fulfilling part of my artistic journey.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
One of my biggest cheerleaders has always been my aai (mom). Her unwavering support for the choices I’ve made, no matter how unconventional, has been a cornerstone of my journey. More than just a mother, she has been a role model for me—a living example of how to lead a life with integrity, resilience, and compassion. Her belief in me gave me the courage to pursue my passion for photography, even when the road seemed uncertain.
I am also deeply grateful to the professors I had during my bachelor’s degree. They were more than just academic mentors—they were guiding lights who nurtured my growth both professionally and personally. Their strength and wisdom inspired me to believe in myself and to strive for excellence, not just in my craft but in how I navigate life’s challenges.
Beyond family and academia, I’ve been fortunate to have supportive clients and collaborators who trusted my vision, even in the early days of my career. Their encouragement and faith in my work have pushed me to keep evolving and exploring new creative avenues.
Each of these individuals has played a pivotal role in shaping who I am today. Their support, guidance, and belief in my potential have been invaluable, and I carry their influence with me in every project I undertake.
