Today we’d like to introduce you to Jadarrel Belser.
Hi, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Well I’m happy that you guys asked me to come back. I got a lot of good responses from the first time I did an interview with you folks. Just like last time, my story is that I’m a unique man from Montgomery, Alabama who moved to Los Angeles to become an actor. I also had a stop in the military for 5 years as a Fleet Marine Force corpsman in the US Navy. Did a tour and Iraq and Japan. Now, I’m still out here trying to play make believe for a living.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Well the biggest challenge really is trying to be taken seriously looking the way I look. I’m a large African American man. That’s what I am. In a lot of people’s eyes, they already have particular roles in mind for me. I’ve done a lot of bouncers and doormen and security guards. One thing I’ve learned is to try to continue to be better so that those stereotypes don’t apply to me anymore. In retrospect, the journey has not been smooth. I’ve had a lot of let downs and broken promises and just outright lies. I continue to forge for because this is my goal and this is what I want. I don’t settle for ‘ordinary’. I’d rather go for ‘extraordinary’. It’s like they say, “a legend is just an average person that didn’t stop”.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Well recently I’ve been doing a lot of work with sitcoms. I’ve done bit parts on Abbott Elementary and stand in work for shows like FX’s Dave and the upcoming Vince Staples show. I also recently started a production company with my writing partner Tim Mathis called Gate Crashers Inc. We written a few features together and we’re trying to get them out there and sold.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
To me, the definition of happiness depends on the person. To some, material things bring happiness. To others, free time or a beautiful sunrise brings happiness. As far as I’m concerned, I find happiness in creativity. I love talking about movies, watching movies, writng movies and making movies. It’s been like that as far as far as I can remember. That’s how it will be for the foreseeable future.
