Today we’d like to introduce you to Ilaria Serantoni
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I trained at the University of Fine Arts in Rome, where my first passion was photography. After years of studying photography, I felt compelled to explore the fundamentals of both photography and modern cinema. I earned a degree in Fine Arts in Rome and later specialized in cinematography in New York, where I currently reside.
My passion lies in crafting evocative scenes through the masterful use of lighting and composition. Behind this artistry lies a significant technical aspect, including a deep understanding of lighting techniques, camera operation, and lens selection.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey has been characterized by a steadfast commitment to my artistic vision. Relocating from my homeland to America, where I now reside, marked a pivotal moment. Adapting to a new culture and economy presented its challenges, yet the fulfillment and myriad opportunities it offers serve as constant motivation. It’s this drive that propels me forward, even in the face of adversity.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Specializing in photography direction and cinematography, I find working with light to sculpt and give life to subjects to be a deeply poetic process and an abundant wellspring of inspiration. What sets me apart is my adeptness at swiftly adapting to various situations and finding creative solutions to any challenges that arise.
My approach to lighting is intricately tied to the scene itself. I value the art of envisioning the final result, which fuels my creative process in shaping the lighting for each shot.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
It was indeed a time of deep self-discovery, exploring both personal spaces and the inner workings of my mind. Sharing that space intimately with my family further strengthened our bond, a bond that proved invaluable when I relocated from Italy to the US.
