Life & Work with Gädes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gädes.

Gädes, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
It started when I was about seven years old, my mother used to have a ton of magazines like Vogue, Elle, and many more fashion based mags. I showed her a photo of this beautiful chocolate woman one day and I told her “I want to do that” she said “model? You want to be a model” I said yes and the rest was history.

I also used to dance, sing, and sew at a very young age.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, definitely not, haha.

Growing up, my family and I would be in and out of shelters.

My mother worked so hard to make ends meet.

I was bullied constantly because of my skin color, which made me doubt myself a lot of times and even doubt my dreams, I had terrible anxiety and depression growing up because of it.

And at 16, I had became homeless while in high school. That same year I had written a scholarship request to a school for modeling and acting and was accepted and graduated. That was my sign to just keep going and that this career path was meant for me.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a full-time independent model based in Los Angeles, CA. I do a lot of campaigns, photoshoots, runway and occasionally, I’ll cameo in a music video or two.

I’m proud of my ability to inspire girls who look like me, I didn’t have much representation growing up as a diverse woman with my skin tone and background so I’m glad I can be that for someone else, I get messages all the time about how inspiring it is which is amazing.

What I would say sets me apart is my genuine love for what I do, before it became my “full time job” it was always something I just genuinely enjoyed doing; getting creative, expressing emotion and art through photos, and inspiring others through what I do.

On top of that, I’m a Jane of all trades so it’s not the only thing I’m good at, lol.

As of recently, I have finally gotten the courage to pursue my music career, and I’m working on an event for artists which I know will be very successful.

What are your plans for the future?
My plans would be to expand my career and becoming more hands on and apart of the industry. I want to bring something new to the industry that still values its purpose and standards. I’m planning on starting my own agency, becoming more of an entertainer, I’m relaunching an amazing clothing brand that I had launched two years ago which is very exciting and hopefully starting a non-profit organization to help low-income families and individuals come out of and heal from poverty,

I guess I’m just really looking forward to expanding myself as an overall artist.
