Life & Work with Frank Synowicz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Frank Synowicz.

Hi Frank, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Frank Synowicz, I am an artist and CG Supervisor based in Los Angeles. I have a profound interest in the intersection of art, science, and technology. The convergence of these curiosities eventually led me to the College for Creative Studies, where I focused on Computer Graphics, Film, animation, and Digital Media. Since graduating in 2006, I have been working in VFX, creating digital imagery for a wide range of projects, including films, streaming episodic entertainment, music videos, theme park rides, video installations, and the immersive realm of virtual reality. The ability to transport audiences to new worlds and evoke emotions through visual storytelling is something that has always inspired me.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have been numerous challenges encountered throughout this journey, with several noteworthy ones to mention. These include navigating tight deadlines, keeping pace with the rapid evolution of technology, and weathering the effects of the current economic climate. Obstacles are bound to arise at every stage of the process, but overcoming them requires flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances. It is essential to approach these challenges with an open mind, allowing for new perspectives to emerge. Perseverance is key, as is fostering strong bonds with friends, teammates, and colleagues, as their support can be instrumental in overcoming hurdles. These projects are often coordinated and collaborative efforts, involving multidisciplinary teams working together, sharing expertise, and pooling resources. Such collaboration not only enhances the effectiveness  of our response but also enables innovation and a comprehensive approach to addressing the challenges we face. Engaging in continuous learning and skill enhancement is also crucial, ensuring that we stay ahead in this dynamic field and contribute to our collective creative goals.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As CG Supervisor, I have the opportunity to lead, assist, and guide talented teams of artists. Together, we develop a variety of effects and animations for diverse projects. In these endeavors, we combine our technical skills and creative visions to bring imagination to life. Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to witness the advancements and prospects that arise from the union of technology and art. This union generates unique challenges and opportunities that push me to explore new techniques, refine my craft, and continually evolve as an artist in this ever-changing landscape.

In March of 2022, under my production/artist handle Synoscope, I co-founded The Spring Street Film Festival with S.C. Mero. The festival showcased 45 short films from local underground artists and filmmakers. As the festival’s director and curator, I assembled an eclectic array of works that included experimental film, drama, music videos, comedy, animation, thrillers, and video art. The festival was held at Something Poetic, a gallery and event space located in the heart of the Historic Core, DTLA. The gallery is the brainchild of S.C. Mero, and it is filled with many of her playful and ingenious works.

I have also been collaborating with Seker Factory DAO (established in March 2022 by Nathan Ginnever and Tiffany Ou). It is an organization that empowers creators to connect, learn, and build together to disrupt culture through supporting public goods and decentralized curation. The community we are cultivating is composed entirely of creatives, technologists, collectors, and Web3 explorers with tried-and-true industry experience. We strive to provide services for incubating and supporting creators, promoting the creative commons, and exposing artists to the power of retaining their autonomous rights in the entertainment industry.
