Life & Work with Edi Roque

Today we’d like to introduce you to Edi Roque.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m a recording and performing Blues Rock artist and music producer born in Sao Paulo, Brazil and currently living in Los Angeles.

As a music producer, I’m a two-time nominee for the Latin Grammys. As an artist, I have released four solo albums to date and my fifth album titled “Here to Stay” is getting released on September 23rd followed by a bunch of live performances in the Los Angeles/OC area and, hopefully leading to a 2023 US and Europe Tour.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It’s not a surprise that the pandemic had such an impact in the whole world and it had unfortunately destroyed from small businesses to entire families and also musicians. After two years of uncertainty, loss of family and friends, isolation and fear, I can say that turning on the switch back to work mode feels as good and fresh as ever.

It has never been easy for the arts or music but now, it seems like hope has been restored in our community and I’m glad to be part of this new moment and my new album reflects that. I’m very excited to share this new music with you all!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Every time I grab my guitar, I’m making a statement. I’m honoring those who came before me and became my musical heroes such as Gary Moore, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton as they are my foundation as a guitarist.

Gary Moore was the inspiration to make me give up on my piano lessons when I was around 12 years old to become a guitarist and I never looked back.

Nowadays, I go through phases where I catch myself playing the piano more than the guitar just because my wife and music partner Skye Butterfield and I also work as Film Composers but, part of my personal mission is to bring back the electric guitar into film score.

Everything I have, every achievement and everything I overcame in life, I owe to my guitar. I owe my own life to my guitar because I wouldn’t even be here or alive if it was not for my guitar and also my wife, but even that I owe to my guitar.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I can never thank enough my wife and my parents for all they have done (and still do) for me.

But I also know that a lot of people out there are feeling lonely and lost so I would like to say that the older I get, the more I realize how important was all of the support I did NOT have, all of the bad experiences and unreliable people around me.

Today I’m very grateful for those helping hands that did NOT exist when I needed the most and for those who walked away when I was broken and depressed. Even having family and loved ones around you, sometimes you are alone, and sometimes you have to fight life on your own.

I don’t know what some of my brothers and sisters in music are going through right now but I do know that you are stronger than you think and whatever is your situation now, nothing lasts forever. You can get out of this, trust yourself and remember that somebody up there is watching over you. Some lessons are hard to learn but stay strong and don’t give up.
