Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominique Draper.
Hi Dominique, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
Growing up I watched my father build his independent record label from the ground up while having his integrity intact. Watching him conceptualize his ideas into reality was far more impressive than any celebrity. Inspired by the music, I created the music videos in my head. I found that I have a knack for creating visuals. Following the independent footsteps, I founded my own video production company Draper Boy Media. After shooting music videos back in Houston, I was blessed with the opportunity to direct and produce my first featured film, Trapped. That was a great learning experience, and I went on to direct several more short films, music videos, and commercials. I’m currently a senior at USC – School of Cinematic Arts, and there, I’ve been able to develop lifelong relationships and knowledge.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a smooth or rough road; it’s been a journey. As any person may find, defining your style could be strenuous, but being open to learning and asking questions has been a factor in overcoming any challenges that may arise.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
Creating and producing is what I do. I wear many hats as a filmmaker, but writing and directing are my focus. I’m most proud of myself; with the powers from the Most High, I’ve been able to remain honorable while navigating through this life. I would say most people would know me for being a positive networking hustler. I believe helping the next person won’t hurt me, so be kind and help when you can.
What’s next?
I am always working on projects and creating somewhere. Following my graduation from USC in the fall, I plan to use the skills and experience to establish my career as a notable Director/Writer and Producer.
