Life & Work with Dominic Lopez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominic Lopez.

Hi Dominic, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Growing up as the only child of three kids, I escaped to my imagination when I realized I couldn’t throw a football for shit. This escape cultivated my love and passion for storytelling and filmmaking. Later in life, when I was supposed to go to medical school, I pulled a fast one on my parents when I instead majored in the most liberal arts of them all – the theatre. Always a camera in my hand, I married my love for filming things with my classmates needs for over the top acting and found my true love, making movies.

Today, I regularly work as a cinematographer on things you haven’t seen and have just recently directed my first feature-length film, Little Jar (which you will see).

It seems my future looks so bright I’ll probably have to wear shades, and I’ll probably wear them at night because the sun never sets on cool. Also, I take nothing seriously except for everything filmmaking, but that’s only because I really love making movies.

Oh, and I’m totally professional. Swearsies.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
If you’re looking for smooth roads, go into paving. If you want to make some creative stuff, you’re probably going to have to cut an ear off. Ain’t nothing smooth about that. But, and I truly mean this, if you stick with it long enough, you just might make something so damn great you’ll blow yourself away. And there’s nothing in this world more rewarding than that.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
During the lockdown, I directed my first feature film titled ‘Little Jar.’ It’s an endearing film of a misanthrope who celebrates working from home until she’s completely cut off from the outside world. When her phone breaks and internet goes out, she learns the true meaning of connection when she befriends a dead mouse.

Written over six months and filmed in three weeks with six people, this movie was the hardest and most rewarding artistic endeavor I’ve ever tackled. The film stars Kelsey Gunn (5 Second Films), Nicholas Anthony Reid (Dear White People) and Jon Snow (The Rookie).

The movie has proven to be my greatest and most fulfilling work to date. We are currently submitting ‘Little Jar’ to festivals across the world in hopes to defeat our enemies and capture glory on the battlefields of the festival circuit. Or at least, get a couple of standing ovations and some delicious ass hors-d’œurves.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
“Why do it now when there’s tomorrow?” is great advice for dirty dishes. Horrible advice for chasing your dreams.
