Today we’d like to introduce you to Devin Thomas
Hi Devin, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
For many aspiring filmmakers, Hollywood is the ultimate destination. In 2014, I left my hometown of Monterey, CA, and moved to Hollywood with a clear goal: to immerse myself in the film industry. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to work on a variety of film projects, music videos, and productions, each experience honing my craft and deepening my understanding of the industry.
In the summer of 2023, I returned to Monterey to work on a deeply personal project—my debut feature film, Peninsula Nights. This film was a significant milestone for me, as I wrote, directed, and shot it entirely on my own. The film features performances by Stephen Ray Thomas and Christine VonRobarie, two emerging talents in indie film, who brought the project to life with their exceptional acting.
Currently, I’m focused on two new feature films, Cork and Feel It All Around, which are scheduled to be filmed back-to-back before the end of 2024. These projects represent exciting new directions in my filmmaking journey, and I’m eager to share them with audiences soon.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In the film industry, we all have visions of how our careers will unfold, but the reality often takes unexpected turns. Despite facing various roadblocks and challenges in Hollywood, I’ve learned that solutions are always within reach. Surrounding yourself with like-minded, dedicated individuals makes a huge difference.
Filmmaking is intensely personal, and having a team that’s as committed and invested as you are is crucial. The biggest hurdles I’ve encountered are finding time and maintaining perseverance. These challenges can feel daunting, but with the right team and a shared vision, they become more manageable.
I was fortunate to work with an incredible group of people on Peninsula Nights. Their willingness to be vulnerable and give their all made the process not just manageable, but truly rewarding. When everyone shares a common goal, it’s amazing what you can achieve together—it’s all about mindset, collaboration, and pushing through the tough moments.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At the core of my filmmaking journey is a profound love for cinema. From a young age, I felt a natural pull towards filmmaking, which has guided my path ever since. Over the years, I’ve honed my skills in screenwriting, camera operating, and directing, steadily becoming the writer and director I’ve always aspired to be.
I often work as a one-man band—just me, the camera, and the actors. This approach fosters an intimacy and connection that’s hard to achieve on larger indie or studio sets. It’s incredibly fulfilling to create impactful drama on such a small scale and see it resonate in a way that feels personal and profound.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
OVID-19, despite its many challenges and tragedies, turned out to be a surprising blessing in disguise for me. The extra time that the pandemic afforded was something I wouldn’t have had otherwise. I used that time to write extensively, and it significantly shaped my career. Reflecting on it, I realize that my journey would have been quite different without the opportunities for growth and creativity that came during those unprecedented times.
