Today we’d like to introduce you to David J. Redman.
Hi David, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I attended film school in Toronto, Ontario, from 2013-2017 and while I was in school, I started a production company (RedTip Productions) with my best friend/cinematographer. We would shoot small music videos and branded content as a two-person team, and when we graduated, we dove full-time into it, where the projects progressively got larger and larger. In 2020, I got my first director rep (TrePalm) where the projects continued to grow, directing videos for clients like Sony and Warner. During COVID I also got connected with a brand called Almost Friday Media (Friday Beers). Working with them ultimately brought me to LA and has allowed me to pursue my dream of directing feature films.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been the smoothest of roads. When you’re 21 years old and recently graduated, real life begins and trying to run a business with no actual business experience tends to have a lot of trials and tribulations. As well as an inconsistent paycheck… There’s a lot of projects we’ve done over the years to pay the bills that’ll never see the light of day. But the biggest struggle is the daily mental battle believing that what you’re doing today will benefit tomorrow.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in music video/commercial/film directing. Currently, I’d say I’m most known for the music video directing. What I’m most proud of is the two feature films I was able to write over the course of 2022. I love writing but it doesn’t come as naturally to me as directing does, so the fact that I’ve finally been able to write these after a decade of trying feels like a huge win. I think what sets me apart from other directors is my adaptability. I believe that every video I work on shouldn’t be pigeonholed into one visual style but rather modify my style to fit the tone of the project. As cheesy as that sounds.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Just reach out to everyone and anyone that you admire. 90% of them won’t answer, but keep going until someone gives you the time of day.
