Life & Work with Dabs Myla

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dabs Myla.

Dabs Myla

Hi Dabs Myla, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
We met while both studying art in Melbourne, Australia. We fell in love with each other and each other’s art! After a short time of dating, we started collaborating together on some paintings, and then after realizing we enjoyed the process and creative outcome much more than our individual work, we decided to combine and only work together from that point on. We have now been in love and creating together for 18 years!

After a vacation to LA in 2008, we decided to leave Melbourne and make the move to Los Angeles. We immediately fell in love with this city and have been living here since 2009.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not always been a smooth road. Being a visual artist is one of the most fulfilling and rewarding things to do in your life, but it for sure can be hard at times. Things like self doubt and the want to constantly push your creative output further can be really hard emotionally and mentally, luckily we have each other to work through things like that which really make it a lot easier.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We are a married couple that collaborate as visual artists. We are most known for our paintings, which are very bold and bright in color. Our use of color is something that is a strong point in our work for sure. As well as paintings we also work in other mediums like ceramics. We also love to collaborate with brands and certain commercial projects. Designing for different mediums and outputs is a lot of fun and a great way to bring ideas to life that maybe wouldn’t have a home in the universe of our fine art paintings!

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
The fact that we are married and also work together so closely seems to always surprise people. The fact that we never come to disagreements about our work and spend so much time together can blow people’s minds sometimes. Over the 18 years we have been together we have never spent a day apart!
