Life & Work with D.Lisa West

Today we’d like to introduce you to D.Lisa West.

Hi D.Lisa, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
After a 35-year career as a Realtor in Seattle, I woke up one day and realized I was not happy. Even though I had studied art for 4 years and learned how to paint the still life in oil. Even though I was trained to facilitate drum circles. Even though I had a creative group of art friends and art students. Even though I truly loved my Real Estate clients.

I remembered that day that I had been longing to be a spiritual life coach for years, to help people in a more profound way than just offering a lovely painting or helping someone make a big decision about where to live. I spent time and resources and became a certified meditation teacher, certified life coach, and moved to Ojai. I am passionate about helping people learn how to recall their dreams (the kind we have while asleep) and use the wisdom that dreams bring us. I now teach, speak, and guide people into their most intuitive, creative life.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road to “here” was not a straight path. I had multiple jobs along the way. I worked on fishing boats in Washington and Alaska, ran a food business that was a complete fail, worked in a grocery store, a furniture store, as a bellhop and a limo driver, got married, had kids, got divorced, worked in Real Estate sales, managed a real estate office, got fired.

Guess what? Getting fired, having a business fail, and not getting those jobs I thought I wanted were all terrific blessings because now I am living the life I could only imagine, coaching people, holding fun workshops, teaching, and speaking. Even the home I’m living in Ojai was a second choice. I live here because the first place fell through, and this place is even better!

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a trained artist (Gage Academy of Art-Seattle) and doodle a small sketch daily for my art Instagram. Recently I created a series of doodle-style drawings that are 6 feet tall and 4 feet wide that are drawn on both sides of the page. I called these my urban angels, and these images are currently in production to become a set of angel divination cards.

Being a trained artist, I encourage others to be creative, even if they don’t consider themselves “an artist.” In my workshops and classes, we use sketching, doodling, and mark-making as part of the process to become still and cruise into the “zone of creativity.” Twice yearly, I offer a dream course, which covers the different kinds of dreams we have, how to remember and how interpret your dreams. My signature 12-week coaching course covers 10 spiritual laws of the universe and sets people up to create their own unique dream life that the love living.

My life advice is to look at what you love even if it scares you a bit, and decide to go for it. Make a decision and take a step in the direction of your dream each day. The universe will rise up to help you in the most amazing and surprising ways. The universe wants us to be joyful and happy. The universe loves to surprise us. What’s your dream? What would you love?

How do you define success?
Success is vibrant health; deeply fulfilling work; sincere and loving relationships; the time and resources to choose what to do and when to do it. Success is waking up with gratitude for another day of life.
