Today we’d like to introduce you to Clinton Svatos.
Hi Clinton, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I became a content creator by accident. In summer 2019, I was introduced to a newer app that let people record short videos and share with people. At first, like everyone else using Tiktok, I created lip sync videos to my favorite songs. My wife started college classes at that same time, after being a stay at home mom for 8 years. I was never the cook in our family, and in fact, I was not very good at it.
The first night home with the kids while Rachael was at school, I found myself trying to come up with something I could make the kids that will be edible. My daughter Lillian shared that she wanted a fried bologna sandwich, something that was in my skill set. I thought that was a great idea and just before I started making it, I though to myself, why don’t I record this on Tiktok. I had initially thought that fried bologna is a struggle meal for low income families, BUT it is also a comfort food. I immediately searched the internet to see if #poormanscomfortfood existed. It did not, and I knew in that moment that I had a good idea for a video series. I did not have any idea that it would lead to the success I have experienced since. Through the pandemic to now, people have found value in seeing how to make meals on a budget and doing so in a very basic way that viewers can relate to. I tell myself I became a home cook/food creator at the perfect time and that contributed to my success as well.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Content creation can be stressful, especially when you begin to monetize your content. You are at the mercy of algorithms, viewers, and various social media platforms – all of which you can not control. Even creating great videos consistently that you know people will love doesn’t necessarily mean they will be successful all the time.
I had to recognize and accept that like most businesses, there will be ebbs and flows. Understanding this, and putting less pressure on myself to create MORE content, to accommodate lower views greatly improved my mental health and how I approached creating content.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
What I do is hardly unique, but the way I approach it feels unique to me. There is plenty of room for other creators in the food space, even in the budget food space. I am proud that I have been able to build an identity that is unique among all food creators by being my authentic self, having fun, using humor, and creating things that ANYONE with any level of cooking skill can do – All while keeping a budget in mind.
What matters most to you? Why?
Making a small impact. I am extremely grateful for the opportunities that I have been given but it is truly rewarding to hear from fans/followers/viewers how my content is helped them in their lives. It is an amazing feeling to be able to have something that is fun to do AND provides value to others.
